People ask me all the time: What’s it like being a woman who covers baseball? Primarily, I have no way of knowing anything else, so I have nothing to compare my experiences to save for the responses I get when I ask my male colleagues what their experiences are in covering the sport. “Do you get messages like this?” or “Does Player X speak to you this way or is it just me?”

From my perspective, being a woman in the sport is hard to describe. It’s both difficult and totally fine at the same time. Sexism is often tough to describe, to convey, to make credible to people who don’t experience it themselves. I find value in people being outright misogynistic

to me instead of subtly condescending in a way that makes me wonder if I am being talked down to because I am a woman, because I am a small-ish young-ish person, or if the person I’m talking to is just an asshole.

Sexism is nebulous. It’s insidious. People often think of it like some sort of wrecking ball: Clear to see, totally destructive. It’s not a wrecking ball. It’s some sort of airborne particle. It floats around and we live in its world, not the other way around.

The Miami Marlins announced on Friday (https://theathletic.com/news/kim-ng-marlins-gm- mlb-first-woman/WXiIQ0NQGs87) that Kim Ng will be their new general manager. Ng becomes the first female general manager in MLB history and the second person of Asian descent to run a team (Farhan Zaidi, president of baseball operations for the San Francisco Giants is the other).

Ng’s career in baseball began when she took an internship with the White Sox in 1990. She became an assistant general manager of the New York Yankees in 1998. She left to take the same job with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2001. She interviewed for a general manager position for the first time in 2005; the Dodgers went with Ned Colletti instead. It has been 15 years since Ng first attempted to become a general manager after seven years at the assistant general manager position.

It’s likely that Ng is the most overqualified person to ever become a first-time general manager in baseball. She brings 30 years of experience to the job — my entire lifetime. She has been closely involved with baseball since the year I was born. Now, finally, she will be the first female GM.

Ng has spent a long time in the strange cohort of baseball people who are often mentioned as interviewing for general manager jobs. Interviewing for a GM role is labor-intensive and requires loads of research and a firm perspective to take to the organization to tell them how you can make them better. In my head, I picture a binder stuffed with so many pages it would make Leo Tolstoy weep. It might be on tablets now. Interviewing for a GM job is a serious commitment. Ng did it over and over, at least four times that we know of with four different organizations before being hired by the Marlins.

It had been so long that truthfully, I was beginning to become afraid that Ng was no longer the best candidate for a GM job. Ng, last I knew, tilted Old School. Front offices are perpetually on the hunt for New School. She’s been working as a senior vice president of

baseball operations from Major League Baseball, so it’s not like she hasn’t been intimately involved with the game as it has changed. So why did it take so long?

There is always another explanation for sexism. Maybe Ng wasn’t the best candidate for each and every job she put herself out there for. Maybe her vision was all off. Or maybe she had to be heads and shoulders above every other candidate just to have a chance. These are the things we’ll never know, but hiring practices in baseball are often bizarre. Everyone is looking for an “out-of-the-box” candidate. There have been many men hired in top executive roles who were not as experienced as Ng at the time of their hiring.

Imagine what it takes to put yourself out there for the same job over and over. The public knows when you’re interviewing for a job, and when you’re apparently coming up short. Truthfully, I would have given up long before now if I were Ng. Major League Baseball loves her. She could be happy and cushy there for a long time, I think. Who interviews for the same job they’ve been publicly turned down for repeatedly over the span of 15 years? Who sticks with it? How much do you really have to want it?

Ng stands alone as the first female general manager now. It will be her name that makes headlines and is the answer to the trivia question and her name in the history books. It will be her pressure, her need to represent well for every woman within baseball. But she is not alone.

She is close with Jean Afterman, the Yankees’ assistant general manager (https://theathletic.com/876076/2019/04/11/yankees-exec-jean-afterman-wants-to-see-a- team-hire-mlbs-first-female-gm-shed-just-rather-it-not-be-her/). Afterman’s name is sometimes floated for GM roles, but she likes her job and is generally not in the market for a GM position. Raquel Ferreira is an executive VP and AGM with the Red Sox (https://theathletic.com/1255364/2019/09/30/raquel-ferreira-hates-the-spotlight-but-shes- finally-venturing-forward-as-she-assumes-bigger-role-with-red-sox/), and has been called the “highest-ranking woman in MLB.” Last November, the Orioles hired Eve Rosenbaum (https://theathletic.com/1393053/2019/11/19/orioles-hire-astros-executive-who-will- become-baltimores-highest-ranking-female-in-baseball-operations/) as their director of baseball development. Three female coaches — Alyssa Naken, Rachel Balkovec, Rachel Folden — were hired last winter.

In the Yankees’ press box, I am not alone either. In a normal season, I get the privilege of working in a clubhouse alongside the legendary broadcaster Suzyn Waldman, who has dealt with stuff I can’t even begin to imagine. It is amazing to watch YES Network reporter Meredith Marakovits work. On the writer side, Kristie Ackert covers the Yankees for the New York Daily News. Marly Rivera is a national reporter with ESPN (and one of very few women of color covering the sport) and is often around. I have colleagues who are women. My direct editor is a woman. The Athletic has three national baseball editors and they’re all women. We are not alone. But it can still be very lonely.

The dilemma of being a woman who works in or covers baseball is the knowledge that you are not just doing this for yourself. People care that there are women in press boxes, broadcast booths, front offices and on coaching staffs. The old adage is that if you can see it, you can be it. For 15 years, Ng put herself out for jobs where there was no woman to which she could look for a model. She is responsible not just for herself and her own success, but for the perception of women in highly powerful baseball roles.

There is a strong camaraderie among women who cover and work in baseball, but there is also fierce competition. Often, it feels like we are competing against each other for a very limited number of opportunities. We must be accountable for one another: It sometimes feels like one person’s screw-up could mess it up for all of us and the women who are looking to come up behind us. It’s a lot of pressure. But covering the New York Yankees is nothing like leading a rebuilding organization while the whole world is watching.

Recently, a male colleague and I each did interviews with the same subject. I listened to his audio of the interview before transcribing mine. Was I talked over more than my male colleague because of my approach? Come to think of it, why am I always getting talked over? Is it me, and the way I talk (a lot)? Or is it the classic “women getting interrupted” thing that I know to be true but can’t quite define it in my own life?

On the other hand, people in baseball simply care that you put in the effort and do the work. “The Grind” has no gender. Last season, a Yankees coach who is a real Baseball Guy — the gruff, big-on-fundamentals type — noticed that some random man on Twitter was questioning the fact that I am a woman who covers baseball. When I walked into the clubhouse the next day, he pulled me aside and went on a tirade about how furious it made him to see that, how I was in the clubhouse talking to people “every f—ing day” and what the hell gives him the right to think he knows more than you?

This is all women in baseball want. To be seen for Doing The Work. We know we have to work harder. Mostly, that’s OK. Kim Ng has done the work. Long after she became deserving of an opportunity to lead a major-league organization, the work has paid off.

I'm glad Lindsey put in the part that "Ng, last I knew, tilted Old School." I remember reading about her with the Dodgers. Presumably, because she's not a former player (and, maybe, be- cause she's Asian), folks assumed that she'd be analytically-oriented. Ned Colletti was pretty old- school as well. Not surprising that Jeter is as well.

As a Marlins fan, I love this hire. Here's hoping her success or failure (which, let's face it, any failure would likely be more the fault of the organization than of her) isn't treated as some kind of referendum on if women "have what it takes" to be a GM. She clearly has what it takes, and there are plenty of highly qualified women out there who also have what it takes, so hopefully this glass ceiling is well and truly shattered.

Two thoughts: Adler is dead on to note that Ng May trend Old School, and that makes her hiring today all the more fascinating. This tenure will be one to watch, especially if the Marlins can move from always- broke to spending some money.

Also, sexism exists in all fields. If you don’t see it, you’re either not a woman or willfully ignorant.

Fixing it is an evolution, just like repairing any other social ill.

This is as excellent next step.

To focus only on her gender is to ignore her qualifications, which diminishes them. She’s well quali- fied for the role. And to suggest that lotz n lotz of females are also qualified diminishes her accom- plishment. She didn’t get her job because she was female but because she had qualifications the employer wanted. I don’t denigrate the Orioles or Astros or Angels for not hiring her, and neither should anyone else. Glass ceiling articles, every one of them, completely Miss the point. She wasn’t hired because she was female( unless, I suppose, Marlins management made a statement that they had decided be- forehand to only hire a female, but I missed that one.) She was hired because she had what the Marlins wanted, and if the Marlins had wanted a qualified male that would have been ok too. I am overjoyed she got hired. It will be fascinating watching her work within a system that isn’t pre- pared for her. It will also be fascinating to watch the,”only because she’s a woman” articles when she is fired, if/when that happens. Regarding your unsubstantiated comment that “if she were a man she’d have been hired blah blah blah.” I’m confident there are many qualified leaders who spend their entire careers being qualified for jobs they never get, for any and every reason. If Ng had never gotten a chance, she wouldn’t be the only one. But I’m glad she got her chance, and wish it had been with a different team, but she represents her own accomplishment and her gender is meaningless to that.

Interesting that we only hear about female GM’s, AGM’s, broadcasters, writers, or other executive jobs. No one ever mentions the female spirts photographers or tv camera operators. We work just as hard as the above mentioned positions but we never get any recognition or coverage, even by our female coun- terparts in the other jobs. We’re spoken down to or over by our male counterparts and ignored by the female beat writers, broadcasters, etc.... I’ve been doing this job longer than many of the females in those aforementioned jobs have been alive! Yes, female sports photographers exist, but we are always over- looked as “females working in sports.”

As a long time Yankee fan there was an appreciation of Kim’s qualifications and knowledge of baseball and I’m sure analytics were a big part of it too.

But knowing Derek Jeter’s autocratic persona, history and tendencies how much will her talent will be respected in that organization? Hopefully not reducing her to merely a figure head of public relations? My fear is that this may not be Jeter’s idea of a great addition but instead grandiose, affirmative action window dressing.

You understand what the acronym GM stands for right? It’s not Director of Operations, Head of Ana- lytics Dept., or Human Resources. Do you really think Jeter will let her perform any baseball transac- tion or decision without that move going through him first? It was my understanding that a GM makes moves independent of ownership if it’s within the means of a designated budget... that’s their job/function to improve the ball club per their expertise.

So you think Kim will be in full control, as the “General Manager” especially knowing Jeter’s proclivi- ty for control? .. good luck with that.

Do you know literally ANYTHING about baseball or sports? Almost no GM's can just do whatever they want and a significant amount of owners want to approve all transactions. A GM ex- ists to do the behind the scenes transnational work of trades and negotiating of contracts. The own- er still has the final say how many times have you read an article that says XYZ owner blocked something from happening.

it takes to produce a great article that I respect; not necessarily a gree with. That being said I think you and Ms Jen McCaffrey do an excellent job.(as well as the editor of MLB Athletic( sorry if I have left some other ladies out, my bad. What a rudimentary thought process maybe you should check in with who is in baseball management positions that have never played baseball. Playing baseball doesn't qualify you to be a manager or a GM. Also to note Kim ng played softball in college its the same sport with a different ball and a different way its pitched.

I’ve thought about that recently. The White Sox hire Tony LaRussa without even interviewing anoth- er candidate, while the Marlins hire Ng to build their future.

As a Twins fan, I really wanted to watch a return to the Twins/White Sox rivalry of the mid 2000s, but the hire of La Russa doesn’t give me a ton of hope. Fun to watch your young talent come up, though. Robert and Jimenez look like the real deal.

First off, congrats to Kim. We'll see if it is well deserved...

So now I will follow with some questions:

1) What type of Budget will Jeter allow her? It's one item being a 2nd fiddle with no limit Budgets on teams such as the Yankees and Dodgers... 2) What is her total compensation vs. other MLB GM's? Did Jeter cheap out as he has done since joining Florida?

3) And most importantly, how much REAL influence will she have? I ask because it has been well reported that Jeter has the final say on Everything and that his ex-GM was actually 3rd in line when it came to final decisions behind...

4) The article was somewhat enjoyable, yet when you attempted to make it indirectly about "You" in cer- tain circumstances, your 'Poor Me' approach was less than enjoyable.

Teams don’t always release compensation info. I’ve never been able to find Andrew Friedman’s cur- rent deal, for example.

Teams rarely disclose their budget limits, other than the intention to remain below luxury trigger points. No one believes them anyway - it’s always perceived as a negotiating tactic.

How much “real” influence will she have? I don’t even know how you expect Jeter or any exec to an- swer a question like that. Every GM is accountable to ownership. None of them have absolute, unfet- tered authority. This is a weird question.

Not sure what your “poor me” comment is all about. The article acknowledges that this is an historic, positive development. A professional who devoted her 30+ year career to the game of baseball final- ly reached the highest level of her industry. There’s not even a whiff that she’s somehow not deserv- ing. “Poor me”?!!! That’s weak, man.

Ng is an outstanding choice. She certainly doesn't need a know nothing like you to praise her and make her an token. There is a stark difference between you and Ng. She its qualified you are the personifica- tion know nothing. You didn't mention her salary. Why not? I thought the sports world was obsessed with peoples salaries. Why not her salary? Is it because she is a women? Should't we be concerned about what she is paid as compared to others (men). Did they get her on the cheap?

It's likely that is the biggest overstatement you've ever written. She is clearly well qualified and deserved the job. No argument there, but there are plenty of people in life who deserve opportunities and don't get them right away. Does it happen more often to women? Perhaps, but not only to women.

As for your interview, the odds are it was your approach. Don't always look to blame others or society. You in fact, answered your own question "on the other hand, people in baseball simply care that you put in the effort and do the work."

When I pitch to people, some are really impressed and want to learn more. Others have dismissed me be- fore I walk in the room. I don't say the latter are dismissing me because of how I look or where I went to school. I know that there are some people who are curious and open minded and there are some who aren't. It doesn't make the latter bad people and I don't take offense. I just move on to the next call. I be- came a lot better at my job when I stopped worrying what other people thought about me.

As a fan of the Cincinnati Bengals I had hoped for many years that they would make Katie Blackburn's title official and just make her the GM (the Bengals don't have an official GM but she holds most of those responsibilities), but I'm so happy that someone finally took that step and gave a highly qualified woman the job she deserved.

good GM or sportswriter has nothing to do with physicality. If a woman loves the game enough to learn the game inside and out... and can evaluate players. Obviously, she has proved that she is qualified... so now we will see if she does the job well.| If she does well, it will help many women who want to follow a similar path. When Jackie Robinson was signed, his impact was great, not because he was a black player, but because he was a great black player. Had he been just average, other teams would not have moved so fast to find their own black players.

I enjoyed this, and you've inspired me to think if there's any reason a non-MLB male would be any more innately qualified to work a job in baseball than a female who simply had the requisite interest and edu- cation for the job. The only reason I could think of where a man might have an advantage is where it re- lates to the male physique, but then we have opposite gender medical providers working with patients without issue.

The problem Ng is going to have going forward is the GM does stuff that isn't like any other job in base- ball in terms of accountability. For the players, we have numbers. For managers, it's harder to quantify but at a certain point the standings don't lie. A GM, however, is both building an organization for the fu- ture AND putting a team on the field RIGHT NOW, and there can often be a conflict between the two.

Theo Epstein's and Jed Hoyer's Cubs lost A LOT for three years. Then they got real good, won a WS, and were in the playoffs every year but one. Epstein and Hoyer had two rings from their days in Boston -- they had the credibility to shut the critics up until their ship came home Will Ng get that or will it be

they had the credibility to shut the critics up until their ship came home. Will Ng get that, or will it be "see, a woman can't do the job"?

Jackie Robinson was in the same position -- if he had washed out in 1947, it would have set back integra- tion of MLB for years. But Jackie was on the field. He could demonstrate every day how qualified he was. Ng will not have that going for her.

The Marlins were SUPPOSED to be terrible this year and ended up making the playoffs. Suppose they lose 100 games next year -- something not at all out of the question. Will Ng be blamed for that? What if her first big trade blows up in her face? She's going to be under a microscope from day one, and she is going to have precious little control over what the Marlins do from day-to-day. Derek Jeter understands this. Internet trolls do not.

I'm rooting hard for her, because she's going to need an awful lot of luck.

I wanted the Orioles to hire Kim and was disappointed when they didn’t, because Kim has excellent qual- ifications, and would present unique challenges for other GMs. This article is about nothing but her gen- der and an imagined gentleman’s agreement to never hire woman, as well as suggesting there are battal- ions of equally qualified woman who pined in bitter loneliness until she showed them the way.

Great article, Lindsey.

I have no doubt women are discriminated against all the time. Still, life is highly competitive. Just be- cause you aren’t selected doesn’t mean someone ruled you out because of your gender, race, creed, age, etc.

That said, i am glad a woman is getting a chance. I hope it opens the door for other women with rare gifts. And that’s important to keep in mind. A lot of people would like to be a GM of an MLB franchise, many with incredible talent and experience.

Although, now that i think about it, where are those people? For sure, there are a lot of idiot decisions by GMs all the time. For example, signing A-Rod to that $252m contract extension in 2007, when he was 32. Or acquiring Giancarlo Stanton when he was 28 and had 11 more years of big bucks contract ahead.

I am talking to you, Brian Cashman.

Maybe the Yanks should get a female GM.

There are some posters questioning the value or significance of the hiring of a woman in this position. If those posters are being serious (I kind of doubt it), it’s just sad. But there are always people whose think- ing is outdated and destined for the trash can of history.

Bottom line — there’s a reason MLB has Jackie Robinson Day. Breaking barriers matters.

This is a great hire, but it's important that she be held accountable just like any other GM. It helps that the Marlins are horrible year in and year out. That means major upside and if she fails, she'll just be part of the GM Club. However, I do believe that small market teams have more pressure to compete than in years past (ie. Rays and A's)
