WHAT IS INCLUSION? WK 1 DQ 2

Hey everyone....

In my words, inclusion means to provide and environment in which everyone feels comfortable and invited regardless of their level of comprehension. In order to establish a successful inclusive classroom, it could vary based upon the challenges students may have. However, a knowledgeable and positive attitude by parents and teachers can help overcome any obstacles that may emerge.

Differentiation means adapt the instructions to meet the students’ needs. In other words, teachers make their best effort to respond to the difference between the students in the classroom. A teacher can reach out to an individual or small group to vary his or her teaching in order to create the best learning experience possible.

My understanding about these two approaches, it is that both have similar concepts that sharing the same goals, ideas of learning and classroom practices. Both approaches share a common goal which is help all students to learn and achieve the most they possibly can. Also, both believes that instructions should be adjusted to accommodate all students need.

I’m considering working with Early Intervention children, whom could have different delay problem or diagnosis. I think a perfect example it is the story a little girl name Andrea. Andrea has cerebral palsy. Andrea’s mom was recommended to expose her daughter to programs where she can share and interact with other children. Andrea’s mom found the program “Mommy and Me”. At the first-class Andrea was very excited, and when she's excited she yells. Andrea’s yelling upset one of the other parents who complained to the director that she didn't want to be in the same class with Andrea because the yelling was disturbing to her son. The director called Andrea’s mom to explain her the situation. At first, she was very upset and didn't want to attend the program any more, but the teacher and the director worked together to find a solution so Andrea could keep going to the class. They decided to experiment by arriving at the class a few minutes before the other children and parents to get Andre acclimated and relaxed. When the other parents and children arrived Andrea still made noise, but not as loudly. She was able to focus on the other children and the activities. It was a difficult transition made smoother with support and understanding.

As you can see with the proper help and support Andrea was able to attend to classes like any other children. Honestly, I think it is the perfect example to explain inclusion and differentiation.
