WHAT IS AN ELEVATOR PITCH?
An Elevator Pitch is a term used to define a quick statement that you share with someone in order to make a strong and effective impression on them, within the span of time it takes you to ride an elevator from the 1st floor of a building to the top floor. The impression you wish to leave with the person you are speaking to can be about anything, such as sales-related or job interview focused elevator pitches. But very often, elevator pitches are referred to in the context of entrepreneurs and new business ideas. In this document, we will focus on elevator pitches for entrepreneurs.
WHY IS THE ELEVATOR PITCH IMPORTANT?
The Elevator Pitch is important for several reasons. It is the first thing that people will hear about your business concept. You can use it to speak with investors, sales prospects, potential employees, for general networking, and even to friends and family that just might be curious about what you have been spending the last year doing without a “stable job.” It can be used to inform, convince, and as a call to action (usually to invest, purchase, or join). At the end of the day, a good elevator pitch does the following:
1. It gets people interested enough to want to know more. If a person requests a follow-up meeting to discuss your idea further, your pitch has succeeded!
2. It does NOT overwhelm the listener with too much information. You only have a couple of minutes to impress your audience. Deliver a clear and concise message.
