What Goes Into A Case Report/Study?

You are writing a report as if you were a CPS/CYS worker who is responsible for investigating a given case. This is meant to be a report that you are to file/give to a supervisor and not a paper that you are writing up about this case.

**This is not a research paper. If it looks like a research paper, then it is not a case report and will be graded down accordingly**

Introduction

· This is where you give a very brief overview of the case

· This is not like an introduction of a research paper, you should not be telling readers what child abuse is or its history…that is another assignment

Client Profiles

· This is a child abuse course; therefore the clients must have been victims as children.

· Parents, grandparents, etc. are not clients. They are the people that are going to help clients with the recommendations that you make later in your report.

· Again, this should be specific to victims only. If someone is not a victim and you want to include them, then you need another section detailing this information

Incident Report/Background

· This is where you are describing how the case came to be known. How did the child maltreatment come to the attention of CPS/CYS or law enforcement? This is an initial assessment and not the full breakdown of what maltreatments were present.

· Who was involved? Demographics for all involved.

· Were there signs of maltreatment? If so, what were they?

· How was the maltreatment discovered?

Child Abuse Report/Allegations

· This is where you talk about every maltreatment the victim(s) were subjected to.

· What types of child maltreatment were present?

· Be specific!!! What were the specific types and subtypes? Provide examples for each.

· What was done once the maltreatment was discovered?

Effects of the Abuse

· This is where you discuss the visible and inferred impacts of the abuse.

· What impact did the different types of abuse have on the victims?

· How do you know this?

Treatment Plan

· This is where you make short-term (under a year) recommendations to help the clients overcome what it was that they went through.

· This should be where you respond to how they should be helped to recover from the maltreatments they experienced and their effects.

Conclusions/Future Recommendations

· In the long term, what can be done to help the victims in 5, 10, 15+ years from now? Be specific.

· What could have been done to reduce the risk of maltreatment for the client(s)?

· What can practitioners take away from the clients’ experiences and apply in their own work?
