What Does It Mean To Be Muslim?
Laval Castleberry
Islam, an Abrahamic Religion
Muslims are monotheistic and worship one, all-knowing God, who in Arabic is known as Allah.
There are Five Pillars that are the core beliefs and practices of Islam.
As Muslims, They believe that nothing can happen without Allah's permission, but humans have free will.
Why It Matters To Me?
I am a Muslim myself.
Muslims perceive that meaningful life is to serve God's purpose and living a life that is linked to an eternal life on one hand, and attaining existential meaning from worldly goals and moral virtues on the other.
Sadaqa is a very important part of my faith to me. Sadaqa is charity given voluntarily in order to please God. Sadaqa also describes a voluntary charitable act towards others, whether through generosity, love, compassion or faith.
Interview with a Christian
I interviewed one of my employees about their views on Muslims and the religion of Islam. Here’s some of his answers/ statements.
When asked what his initial thought of Muslims and Islams he replied “they don’t believe in God.
My interviewee also said “Muslims are known to be violent and terrorists”
Me: “Do you know any Muslims other than me”
Interviewee: “No I don’t. I always assumed most Muslims live in the middle east.
During conversation my Interviewee brought up that he believes women are treated less than in the religion of Islam, and thet he beieves little empasis is placed on family life and children as well.
Interview with a Muslim
I interviewed my Muslim brother about their views on Muslims and the religion of Islam. Here’s some of his answers/ statements.
When asked what it’s like to be Muslim he responded “ There’s certainly a stigma attached, but there’s also a community among us especially as Muslim Americans.
My interviewee mentioned that the religion of Islam has brought him great community as Islam is the 3rd largest religion.
Me: “What does it mean to be Muslim to you?”
Interviewee: “To me being Muslim means living in devotion of Allah to my best ability. Nothing in my life happens without Allah’s permission, so anythin in life is at his will. This is what makes me successful business man.
A statement my brother made stood out to me was the need for education in the world. “Not enough people are educated in the true meaning of being Muslim. It’s closer to Chrisianity than most people think.”
The Truth About Islam
All Muslims and most Christians acknowledge that they believe in the same god even though their understandings differ. Arabic-speaking Christians call God Allah, and Gideon bibles, quoting John 3:16 in different languages, assert that Allah sent his son into the world.
The Quran explicitly states that men and women are equal in the eyes of God. Furthermore, the Quran: forbids female infanticide (practiced in pre-Islamic Arabia and other parts of the world) instructs Muslims to educate daughters as well as sons.
There are about three and a half million Muslims in the U.S. That makes Islam the third-largest religion in the United States, with just over one percent of the total U.S. population.
Despite the fact that there are so many Muslims in the world, in many places there is a lack of understanding about Muslim people and Islam. In addition, the increase in anti-Muslim movement and the unfortunate conflation of terrorism with Muslim people contributes to biased attitudes and reinforces stereotypes. These are due to a few bad apples, but they’re are bad apples in every race, religion, and culture.
