Discussion module 4
What is a rumination?
For the purpose of this course, a rumination is a writing assignment that calls for the student to critically
examine or think about a situation, model, concept, philosophy, problem, or aspect. Each student will
write about their response to the assigned chapters in an intentional and reflective manner.
I do not want a simple regurgitation of material, my expectation is that each student will analyze, assess,
explain or discuss their reaction, position and/or ideas regarding the assigned subject matter. There are
three (3) general goals for assignments including the ruminations: 1) to see how the concepts can be
associated with individual academic and life experiences, 2) enhance written communication, and 3)
enhance ability to critique or defend a model, theory, concept or idea.
As you are completing assignments do keep in mind standard collegiate level writing practices. Applying
Bloom’s Taxonomy principles in your assignments is a good practice for developing critical thinking and
analytical thought pieces. The following are two good Internet sources to view regarding Bloom’s
concepts: http://www.teachers.ash.org.au/researchskills/dalton.htm; http://eduscapes.com/tap/topic69.htm
