It's a question the American Institute for Cancer Research asked more than 1,000 people. Only 42% said diets low in vegetables and fruits increased cancer risk. 43% linked alcohol to a higher risk of the disease. And 35% identified a diet high in red meat as an important factor. The institute says research has consistently linked all of these things to increased cancer risk, and the low awareness numbers show Americans are either not hearing or are ignoring health messages. On the positive side, awareness that obesity is a risk factor is on the rise. Same for being physically inactive. Many survey respondents listed pesticide residue on produce, food additives, genetically modified foods, stress and hormones in beef as cancer risk factors even though research has yet to provide definitive answers. The institute's associate director of nutrition programs says people need to learn more about the factors that they can and do control every day. She says while there are no guarantees, studies show a healthy diet, regular activity and healthy weight could cut cancer incidence by one-third.
