Assignment: Exploring Renaissance Art at the MET
Instructions
1. Read textbook pages 414-417Links to an external site. (scroll down just a tiny bit to find the first section):

· "Artists and Patrons."
2. Review the Lecture 11A Transcript . Download Lecture 11A Transcript.
Look specifically at pgs. 3 and 4 where I discuss artistic trends and techniques in the transcript.
3. After reviewing the lecture and reading the textbook pages assigned, I would like you to explore some Renaissance paintings in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET)Links to an external site. , which is located in New York City.
· When you start exploring the website linked above, please do not change the filters- they are set for the type of art you need to look at for this assignment).
· Take your time exploring the different paintings listed. When you click on each painting, it will open up a page with an explanation about the painting and a larger image of it.
· Make sure you read over the questions below. They will tell you what I want you to do for this assignment.
Questions
1. Find a painting that you believe best represents the artistic trends and techniques you learned about Renaissance art from my lecture and the textbook pages assigned above.

· Your chosen painting does not need to demonstrate ALL trends and techniques you learned about, but it does need to reflect at least one.
· The trend or technique you identify must be from my lecture or the textbook pages assigned. Do not discuss random techniques described on the website. (these aren't things I taught you about).
· You might find a painting that shows ideal beauty or linear perspective or one that demonstrates heroic art similar to that of Michelangelo, etc.
· You do not need to write anything for this part of the assignment. You just need to choose a painting from the website based on the instructions above.
2. In your written answer, I would like you to:

· Identify the name and date, and artist of the painting you chose (if there is no known artist, you may simply state "artist unknown").
· Then, offer a description of the painting. Make sure you explain this in your own words. Don't copy and paste from the website.
3. Next, in your answer, I would like you to explain which artistic trends/techniques of the Renaissance your chosen painting reflects. To do this:

THE DILEMMA OF THE ARTIST
Key Characteristics of Renaissance Arts and Learning during this Period

Without question, the most enduring legacy of the Italian Renaissance has been the contributions of its artists, particularly those who embraced new media and new attitudes toward the human body. The creative and economic opportunities afforded by painting on canvas or wood panels freed artists from having to work on site and entirely on commission. We have also noted (Chapter 11) that the increased use of oil-based paints, as pioneered by the artists of Flanders, further revolutionized painting styles. To these benefits, the artists of Italy added an important technical ingredient: mastery of a vanishing (one-point) perspective, which gave an illusion of three-dimensional space. They also experimented with effects of light and shade, and intently studied anatomy and bodily proportions: techniques that also influenced sculptors. Just as Petrarch and other early humanists had urged a return to classical poetry and rhetoric, artists now recaptured the symmetry of classical art and placed the human subject at the center of artistic experience.
