Essay Outline

Type this assignment essay style—do not number or title the paragraphs; follow the typed format

on the syllabus (double spacing, indentations, Times or Arial 12 point font, etc.)

Paragraph #1—Introduction

(*3 to 4 complete sentences max.; indent the first line)

Start with the thesis sentence—one sentence, include all of the following:

o The full name of the artist [required]

o Title of the art work (A)

*e.g. underline the title in the thesis & add the abbreviation-letter (A) after the title.

o Identify the art form (list as 2-D or 3-D, not both)

o Categorize the artwork using the new Reference page, “Evaluating the Evidence” on

Moodle.

e.g. Select one—political, economic, social, cultural, intellectual, religious, or

environmental categories.

Then, after the thesis, continue your introduction by briefly introducing your topic or issue that you

feel relates to the art work. And, lastly finish the introduction by listing the full name of the

museum, gallery, or art space (the correct/full name and city; address not needed).

Body Paragraph #2

(*4 to 5 complete sentences; indent the first line)

Objective descriptions—describe the visual appearance of the art; what it looks like; and what you

noticed. Specify these visual elements, select any 5 art elements:

o Elements of art such as,

lines, shapes, colors, value (contrast), textures, patterns or any element repeated,

size (measurement needed), and/or medium

o See the Course Resource link “Elements of Art” on Moodle for more examples.

Body Paragraph #3

(*4 to 5 complete sentences; indent the first line)

The topic or issue you will select for this paragraph is completely based on your impression of the

art—the subjective/the message or meaning you took from the art. You will explain your chosen

topic or issue by citing from one expert’s published work,

o Sources can include—web article, book, magazine, scholarly journal, even popular-art

sources such as song lyrics, movie/tv scripts, games, poetry, scripture, etc. Pick a credible

publication—remember no Wikipedia!

o Sources cannot include the museum/gallery or the art book—remember, this is not about

the artist; you need an outside source to explain your topic or issue.

o Tone: will your expert/source have supporting views as your own?

Or, will you present content from someone with differing views

[*opposing views or uncomfortable truths that challenge a personal or cultural belief; or

brings to light an unjust event, action or idea.]

o Begin Paragraph 3 with a topic sentence—mention your source and restate your topic or

issue.

Journal Assignment #1: Online Art Museum Critique

J. Rodriguez, M.F.A.

ARTS 1301

o Use at least 3 sentence enhancers in your sentences and cite directly from your source

(copy as stated) or indirectly (paraphrase).

e.g. Sentence enhancers, such as but not limited to (more on Moodle):

According to…

Based on the information I read…

o Include subjective statements to further explain something personal yet relevant—your

overall impression, shared values/beliefs, or life experiences as the artist; and which part of

the art led you to these idea(s)?

o Works Cited

For Paragraph 3 only—you must list one source you actually used/cited for the above

paragraph. Again one source maximum, remember to correctly type/format on a

separate page; see examples posted on Moodle.

Body Paragraph #4

(*4 to 5 complete sentences; indent the first line)

Specify a creative plan of action by detailing at least 2 original solutions to further inform;

educate; further promote; or bring awareness to your topic or issue.

Think of people and active roles; ‘how to’ include others or, your role in a global society. Imagine if

you had all the means to do it!

Think of something new,

e.g. Explain your plan—what would you make; or even “say” to get others interested in your topic

or issue; maybe it’s a creative marketing plan (e.g. some people make t-shirts, or bumper stickers);

or, an educational plan (who would be your point-person/what/when/where?)

e.g. This is NOT a new solution: “…everyone should attend an art show or create more art.”

Paragraph #5—Conclusion

(*3 to 4 complete sentences; indent the first line)

For the last paragraph, use concluding statements to summarize your museum/gallery experience.

The closing should include how this assignment has influenced your thoughts on the correlation

between art & local communities; art & global-social topics or issues.
