Weight Management Assessment Project 1
You will respond to the following prompts. For each of these, you will use what you have learned from this class thus far, additional (credible) research if necessary, and personal experiences (if you are comfortable sharing).
Prompt 1: Polly is your client. She has come to you with the goal of body re-composition, primarily focused on lower body fat. What energy balance would you have Polly striving for and what are a few strategies you could implement to help Polly reach that goal? (5 points)
Prompt 2: Using the client scenario from Prompt 1, while it may be likely, would it be necessary for Polly’s weight to change to meet her desired goal? Why or not? (2 points)
Prompt 3: Discuss some (at least 3-4) ways that weight stigma and/or biases could impact a person. Where might individuals experience weight stigma and/or bias. Remember that weight stigma and bias could impact both under- and overweight individuals. (5 points)
Prompt 4: Calculate your RMR using the Mifflin St. Jeor Equation (show your work), then use an activity factor to determine your TEE. What are some factors not included in the equation could make your RMR value higher or lower? (5 points)
Prompt 5: Think about your own non-exercise energy expenditure (NEAT) on a typical day. Do you feel your current average NEAT is in line with your goals at this time? Why or why not? Regardless of how you reflected on your own NEAT, if a person was wishing to increase their NEAT, what are some ways (at least 3) they could do this? (4 points)
Prompt 6: Steve is a former collegiate athlete. He is now working a sedentary job and currently has a BMI of 29. Outline a few (at least 3) things you would want to know more about before just assuming that Steve is unhealthy due to an overweight BMI. (4 points)
Prompt 7: Consider the influences of body weight such as social-cultural norms, lifestyle, environmental, and socio-economic factors. Select (2) of these and discuss how these influence intakes and/or outputs and in turn body weight. You are encouraged to discuss the factors that are bigger influences in your own life, however you are not required to reflect personally if you are not comfortable doing so. Remember that influencers are not always negative so you can talk about positive aspects of these influencing factors as well. (5 points)
