I used the Walkability Checklist from the US Department of Transportation. I used this checklist in the City Heights area of San Diego, which is where I live. The worksheet made me notice more things about my neighborhood that I had overlooked, like the amount of cracked or uneven sidewalks in it, or how children are unable to cross safely at most intersections.
Two things that can be improved in the community are crosswalk striping and fixed sidewalks. There are multiple intersections where the crosswalks are not painted or they are faded and need touch up. There are also many sidewalks that have been damaged due to trees or areas where there are no sidewalks at all. These two can be fixed by submitting requests to the city of San Diego on their maintenance site. I was able to submit a request for a crosswalk striping to be redone, and will hopefully hear back soon.
My results on the worksheet were low (13). This is mainly because drivers do not respect the speed limit, there are multiple blocked views on the sidewalks and while crossing the streets, the area is not well lit, and people do not keep up with the maintenance on their tree belt.

Share the location where you used the checklist. I used my current neighborhood where I live, Santa Ana, Ca 92707.
Discuss at least 2 things that you learned about your community or 2 things that you can improve within your community based on the checklist you chose.
Two things that I learned about my community is that every few square miles there are parks and community centers. Some areas have centers that offer services such healthy eating, English second language and fitness classes. Other center offers activities for kids and older adults. The streets are different is some areas, and lights. The conditions of the streets vary from neighborhood to neighborhood. I don’t think I would change anything in my neighborhood.
Share your thoughts about your results.
While doing my walk through I did not accept much, until I read the question on the check list, which made focus on certain areas specific to environment. I watched how people engaged in the parks, walked in the streets and how they drive in the residential streets. My neighborhood rated 16-20, okay but needs work. I can see where improvements are needed, however I like the old vintage look of the homes and buildings.
