1. Please share your thoughts on how this incident can be used to provide/develop public health programs that can prevent or respond to similar catastrophes.

A Mass Causality Event (MCE) has been developed to help in the preparedness of mass causalities and a surge in injuries that are required emergency medical attention (Melmer, et al., 2019). This helps support and direct operational plans outside the hospital including emergency medical services, local law enforcement, government agencies, and city officials. This program helps bring together all these programs to do mock training to optimize these programs and direct them to work together in an event.

1. What type of injuries can result from these types of events?

There are so many injuries that occur with these types of events. You have physical injuries due to gunshot wounds, broken bones, burn wounds, wounds from panicked victims and so much more. You then have to look at the emotional injuries that occur. Both from the victims, responders, and families.  

1. How about the first responders, what type of occupational injuries will they be exposed to?

First responders are exposed to multiple injuries including physical harm, being shot or wounded themselves. Injuries due to not using proper lifting techniques, or movement techniques causing long term injuries like back and shoulder injuries. You then have to look at bodily fluid exposures and other toxic exposures. One of the biggest injuries would be emotional and mental injuries that occur from experiencing the trauma of the incident.

Public health can provide education on mass shooting, safety planning and effective communication in a high stress event. Its important to respond in a calm manner to communicate with 911 dispatcher, first responders and others involved.  I don’t think this incident could have been prevented, but believe that having first responder on site made a difference and possibly saved lives.

2. What type of injuries can result from these types of events?

Injuries that could result at these events range from gun shot wounds, trampling of persons, broken bones, lacerations and internal injuries.

 

3. How about the first responders, what type of occupational injuries will they be exposed to?

Occupational injuries first responder can be exposed to are gun shot wounds due to exposing themselves while moving people. Trauma due the experience of person wounded and expiring. Pulled muscle from lifting and sprains from rapid movements.
