For my assignment I chose to go with a Senior client from the choices provided.

Because my client is a senior, I felt it would be appropriate to use the checklist tattled:

“CPSC home safety-checklist seniors”  

 

in reviewing the checklist, I thought it would be a good idea, to emphasize a few modifications for my client.

To begin, I would likely verify the cognitive, mental capability of my client, to make sure they can perform their ADLs with little to no help in a safe and timely manner.

With seniors it is important task such as brushing their teeth, can easily be overlooked as forgotten. When in fact the client no longer performs this self-care step.

Oral health is especially important since, disease can sometimes creep in through the mouth.

 

If my client were to live in a two-story home, I would verify slip-resistant stair strips are place correctly an in place. Because we know, falls can be the reason clients can end up in the hospital with injuries stem from falls.

 

Another safety modification, I would address would be temperature control. We know, as we get older temperature regulation can be a little more difficult. To make sure, my clients are safely able to stay warm or cool. The scheduling of regular maintenance of air conditioner and heating systems would be prioritizing. If my client were to rely on portable units versus central heating and cooling. We would want to follow the recommendations set forth in the checklist, by providing adequate space for heaters.

When thinking of children what do you believe is the most important safety measure to keep them safe in any room in the house?

Do you think parents are educated to the point that they look to maintain safety in their homes?  Or do they implement the safety measures and do not spend the time to re-visit to make sure that everything is in place to avoid any type of injury and or death?

1. Give at least 2 examples of environmental modification you will do to make it safer for the type of population you chose.

The population and checklist that I choose are the senior citizens and home safety checklist seniors. I often feel like senior citizens are often forgotten, my Nanna complains about that all the time. She also complains about the term senior citizens, and prefers silver foxes. As we get older, we may feel young inside but our bodies unfortunately slow down a bit and become more fragile. More often than not, those who are 60+ have settled down for the most part and don’t usually move to another area. The best option would be to environmentally modify their homes. Two examples of this would be installing smart homes devices, assistive technology and medical alert systems. With the continuous advancement of technology, installing these type of modifications inside senior citizen’s homes will serve as a tremendous help. Voice controlled home devices can be a big help If they fall and injure themselves, they can call for help. Or simply automatic lights in the house when they are going to the restroom or kitchen at night, Medical alert systems can notify immediate family members, doctors or first responders when need be. I feel like every senior citizen should have access to this at a discounted price as well, we must take care of our older folk, it’s the least we can do.
