Social Cognitive Theory
Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) believes both the person and outside influences can affect behavior. SCT explains the influence and interaction of behavior, environment, and personal/cognitive factors on human behavior (Viswanath, 2015). SCT is used to help guide and inform people to adopt health behaviors that promote health. Examples of personal/cognitive influences on behavior include self-efficacy, collective efficacy, outcome expectations, and knowledge. Environmental factors on behavior include observational learning, normative beliefs, social support, and barriers/opportunities. Behavioral factors encompass behavioral skills, intentions, and reinforcement/punishment.
If I were to develop an intervention at my university to increase the number of people receiving an annual flu shot the constructs I would use would be; knowledge, social support, and observational learning. I would use media campaigns (via the universities social media and mass email to students from the student health center) and poster boards throughout classrooms on campus to spread awareness and knowledge about the importance of the flu vaccine and where you can receive the flu vaccine. I would also use these campaigns to promote social support by framing support from the campus community to get the flu vaccine, I would incorporate videos of students encouraging the rest of the student body to receive their flu vaccine. Lastly, I would organize flu vaccine stations throughout campus, with the help of the student wellness center, to not only make access to the vaccine easier but also promote observational learning. When other students watch and see other students receiving the vaccine this could influence their behavior to receive the vaccine as well.

Social Cognitive Theory
To increase the number of individuals receiving an annual flu shot in a workplace using the Social Cognitive Theory, I would base my intervention around the following three constructs: knowledge, barriers/opportunities, and reinforcements.
First, the knowledge construct can be defined as the individual’s understanding of health behavior risks and advantages of behavior changes. (Glanz et al, 2015) When creating flyers and informative emails to send throughout the workplaces, I would highlight the flu mortality and morbidity rates for the state and regional areas. These epidemiological statistics would be utilized to signify the great impact and importance an annual flu shot can make.
The second construct I would remove any travel barriers and provide employees opportunity receive their annual flu shot on the worksite, through local hospital or health department coordination. By offering an onsite flu shot, employees do not have to spend extra drive-time or make extra stops, employees would be offered an extra 10-minute paid break to get the flu shot. Productivity while flu shots are offered would be marginally impacted, but the overall benefits of more employees being vaccinated would outweigh that cost.
Lastly, utilizing reinforcement is the final construct this intervention will discuss. As previously mentioned, employees will be offered an additional 10-minute paid break to get their flu shot, so that they are compensated for their time and effort. An additional day-off will be offered as an incentive to get the flu shot. Once the employee receives their shot, they will be able to submit immunization certification to the HR department for approval and then an additional workday of time off will be added to their balance.
I believe that these three constructs will effectively compose an intervention method to increase employees who get the flu shot.
