How does emergency management learn from history?
Emergency management can take past healthcare management experiences whether they have failed or succeeded and figure out what can be be improved for the next time around. One of the main factors of emergency management is to prepare for future events even though the likelihood of certain events may not happen but it’s good to to avoid any issues. An example of learning from history would be the horrific acts of 9/11. September 11, 2001 changed not only the world but the way emergency management deals with disasters. “These incidents caused the important issue of public health and hospital emergency preparedness to be examined more thoroughly. As a result, the public safety and public health communities have made domestic preparedness and medical counter terrorism a national priority for health care and public policy” (Reilly, 2010). 9/11 brought up the issues of the lack of funding on the healthcare systems infrastructure, healthcare reform, domestic preparedness and more.

Many threats can impact a community. Some examples of threats can be man-made, natural disasters, and technological attacks`.
Scripps Healthcare just recently was the victim of a cyberattack. One of the Scripps locations is a Level I trauma hospital. This attack resulted in the delay and bypass of medical services provided by Scripps to the community. It also affected and contributed to a surge of patients to the other hospital system around the area including UCSD and Sharp. UCSD declared a Code Orange during the incident so that we can increase capacity to receive patients diverted away from Scripps while they mitigate the effect and identify a solution to the ransomware attack on their electronic medical record. The impact of compromised patient medical information is very significant because medical records can be altered and removed that can be a matter of life and death decisions during the care of patients.
On the other side of the country, Ida is passing through Louisiana causing fear that it will have another Katrina effect. We have fires still raging within California. Communities around the country are experiencing different emergencies.
