WEEK ONE DISSCUSSUON #1

Cultural and SES Context

How do the cultural context and social economic situations influence early child development?

Do some research on this, cite, and reference this research to support your responses.

Give examples from your own development.  How did the circumstances of your upbringing shape your childhood experiences? Use course vocabulary and cite objective sources of information when possible.

WEEK ONE DISCUSSION #2

Attachment (bonding after birth) needs far more attention than usually given.

Before responding to this Discussion Forum, read the two articles located in the Week 1 Readings.

During the early through mid- 20th century (and this is still the case in many other nations), babies were immediately separated from the mother upon birth. It was believed that the best approach was holding a newborn by his or her feet while giving a firm slap on the buttocks to initiate crying. Then the infant is weighed, measured, swaddled and carried to the hospital nursery. Thought was not given to the relevance of the immediate bonding with the mother/primary caretaker(s).

Research done on Rhesus monkeys, as well as observations of babies isolated in orphanages, led psychologists to recognize the relevance of early bonding and it's impact on intimacy in future relationships. The following short video is sad to watch but it clearly depicts the grief caused by the lack of attachment with a mother figure.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O60TYAIgC4 .

This supports what Erik Erikson named the first year of life as the  Trust vs Mistrust stage. This goes far deeper than many may realize as it can impact most, if not all, later relationships. Bonding between newborn and mother (or primary caretaker) is extremely significant.

The article on Winnicott's emphasis concerning seeing and mirroring of the newborn adds to this knowledge of the importance of birth and early months for healthy psychological development.

Many young parents make a choice to go to birthing centers or they choose to have a doula (midwife) and birth at home.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JC3D7jI_iXU

How do these articles and videos impact your own ideas of pre and perinatal birth as well enhance your understanding of the Trust vs. Mistrust (development of Hope) stage during the first year of an infant's life?
