weekone
Part A-
After reading What else matters besides strategies and skills? and the required chapters from this week, respond to the following questions: How does learner motivation and self-efficacy play a role in literacy instruction? In what ways should the teacher tend to the cognitive and affective aspects of the learner? How does the learning environment play a role in literacy instruction?
Share with your colleagues your “ideal” classroom environment that would support literacy including the alignment to the content area and age of learners. Consider the physical, emotional, and social environment. Be descriptive! You might want to include pictures of your own classroom setting if you are currently teaching or images from your research. Make sure to include in your discussion the key dimensions of the classroom setting mentioned in the text on pages 29-32: vision, authenticity, active participation, academic challenge & support, and social support 300-400 words
Part B-
Cycles of Literacy Instruction
After reading A Sample Reading Cycle and the section titled “Literacy Instruction Occurs in Cycles” in our text on pages 26-28, illustrate your understanding of the cyclar and spiralized concept of literacy instruction. You must address the following items in your illustration:
· The key components of a spiralized literacy curriculum: Introduce, Guide, Culminate, Plan.
· The roles of scaffolding and fading in the spiralized curriculum.
· An example from your teaching or future teaching assignment that depicts explicitly layering ideas and connecting to previous concepts and prior knowledge.
· A short reflection on how you use or will use spiral curriculum to engage and empower learners in literacy skills in your content area (e.g., using real-world story problems in mathematics).
Write a 500-word response
Part C- For Week 1, you will embark on the first step of creating a Literacy Unit Plan by looking over the information presented in Chapter 3 pages 37-41. Then, complete the pre-instructional planning information located on the Literacy Unit Plan template. The pre-instructional planning information includes the following:
· Title of Unit: (A phrase or two)
· Content Area: (Subject; math, science, language arts)
· Essential Guiding Question: (To guide the entire Unit)
· Learner Objectives: (minimum of 5 learner objectives) Make sure to review how to write clear learning objectives.
· Timespan: (minimum of 3 weeks which equates to 15 instructional days)
You will also complete your choice of creating a mind map or outline that initially frames what topics and subtopics your Literacy unit will cover. Do not worry about the details at this point. Just depict what major topics and sub-topics the unit will cover. It might be most helpful to break down the topics and sub-topics by week.
