Week 4 Weekly Briefing This week you will shift your focus from the internal examination of organizations, to the examination of the external forces that shape, limit, and create opportunities for creating value and competing. The specific focus this week will be on the organization’s General Ecosystem, which includes identifying the most-comprehensive set of stakeholders and understanding how these stakeholders and the potential impact of broad political, economic, social and technological forces shape future opportunities and threats. This week you will:

• Evaluate the primary external forces of an industry utilizing a comprehensive P.E.S.T. analysis of a global industry.

• Assess the broad stakeholder system and its implications to a company. • Apply key insights from P.E.S.T. and Stakeholder strategy analysis tools and

concepts towards the development of relevant portions of a strategy playbook. • Develop appropriate recommendations for how an organization can respond

effectively to broad external forces. Discussion 1: Case Analysis with Discussion: Stakeholder Analysis of Tesla Motors and the Global Automobile Industry

The goal of this week’s case discussion is to have you become proficient at identifying critical general forces and stakeholder interests/needs that shape the ecosystem of the organization and which provide a “contour” for strategic action, through the use of a large-scale, industry-level case study (Tesla Motor in 2013).

For this examination of Tesla Motors and the global automobile industry, refresh your understanding of P.E.S.T. analysis, which you conducted in your MBA marketing course. P.E.S.T. analysis serves as the starting point for organizing the stakeholder assessment you will be doing for this case study. Remember, too, that you should work to clearly explain the rank ordering of stakeholders, and make an active argument for what this rank means, in terms of strategic actions and initiatives.
