Part I:

Islamic Art vs Christian Art

There are both similarities and differences between Islamic and Christian Art.  To start off, Christian Art is a sacred art and was important to the community. It used themes and imagery from Christianity. There were different types of forms of this art which served as its identity and attracted worship followers. It developed Christian iconography, and its own architecture, sculptures, and paintings. As stated in the textbook, “Christianity from the beginning emphasized congregational worship, and so a fundamentally different kind of building was needed (Mark, 2016).  Because of this, art was geared towards holy imagery and religion life. That being, imagery of saints, angels, and Life of Christ, and in early art, themes of death and resurrection. A good example of this is the Basilica. The intention was really to connect people to God. It was very didactic. On the other hand, Islamic art was somewhat similar too. Their art was often represented in the same forms, that being mainly through architecture (mosques and palaces) and interlacing patterns. An example is the Great Mosque, Cordoba, which was essentially a grand prayer hall.  However, it can differ because it did not really represent itself through figural imagery. Therefore, Islamic art was more abstract and focused more on the word of God. Both can be similar because they focused on classical art and symbolized divinity.

Part II:

I will compare two works from different art periods. Michelangelo's “Sistine Chapel” ceiling and Jacques-Louis David’s “Oath of the Horatii”.  One being from the Renaissance period and the other the Neoclassicism period. Michelangelo's artwork included a fresco style and really emphasized how humanity needed Salvation as offered by God through Jesus. That being said, it included scenes from the “Book of Genesis” and “The Last Judgement”.  As stated, “Along the sides were painted niches set with standing figures representing Christ, Saints Peters and Paul, and thirty popes that had been canonized as saints”. (Mark, 2016). Michelangelo implemented illusionistic architecture where the ceiling was painted to look like stone which then divided the ceiling into discrete zones. It included detailed drawings and many pigments.  On the other hand, Jacques’ large painting depicted a war scene between Rome and Alba Longa. A much darker scene. As stated, “The painting depicts the stirring moment when three Roman brothers, the Horatii of the painting’s title, swear before their father to fight to the death…”(Mark, 2016) Additionally, it portrayed great patriotism as it included detailed figures. This can be similar to the Sistine Chapel because both portray figural imagery (both with muscular style) as well as quite emotional/significant scenes. In essence, both portray someone who is defending. For Jacques’ case it would be the Roman brother’s father and in Michaelangelo’s case, God. Both tell a story. It can also be similar from a materialistic standpoint too. Both paintings used bright coloring to emphasize the human body, therefore the audience would have been geared toward to look at them.

COLLAPSE

In Islamic culture, there are certain religious restrictions that forbid the use of imagery and representation of human or animal forms because of the belief that God revealed His word to the Prophet Muhammad and that his words (Qur’an) must be followed through submission of the teachings of the words (Getlein). Because of those restrictions, calligraphy and the use of sophisticated abstract, geometric, and linear decorative elements were used as art to worship the Islamic religion. To contrast the Islamic culture of artwork with Christianity, Christianity used paintings and sculptures to represent their beliefs of the religion. Even though both religions used different forms of art to represent their beliefs, both religions expressions were complex and sacred to their people. If you also compare the structures of the Mosque’s and Cathedral’s made, you would see the beauty of each because of the consistency of the elements used inside the buildings.

Figure 21.12 Page 484 “The Joy of Life” – Henri Matisse

I chose to compare the piece of Eugene Delacroix “The Women of Algiers” and Henri Matisse’s “The Joy of Life” to show the similarities of Romanticism and Fauvism. In both paintings, each artist focuses on women enjoy their time. As you can see in Delacroix and Matisse’s paintings the women are in a setting of which they are relaxed and free. It gives me a feeling of exoticness and pure happiness. I also feel like both artists showed the beauty and strength of women in their paintings.
