What is the purpose of triage? How do you make it effective?

The purpose of triage during a public health emergency or disaster is to offer the proper and immediate treatment to injured patients that need medical attention and care immediately after a disaster or mass casualty have occurred. Trauma centers play an important role during a disaster or public health emergency they are capable to perform the most complex trauma treatments to care trauma patients and have a vast variety of personnel that can provide the ideal triage for this kind of events (Reilly & Markeson, 2011).

Trauma centers have more resources and they emergency Department has more appropriate personnel and supplies to provide adequate special care for patients. There also certain differences during a triage pandemic where more precautions are taken into consideration to prevent the spread of agents to the population. Triage areas are set up to determine which patients need to be in quarantine or in isolation to control the chain of infection. To make a triage effective it’s important to follow proper procedure and treat the most critical patients first using the resource management tool to look at the bigger picture and train and educate staff to adequately treat as many patients as possible and those who have life threatening injuries and illness (Reilly & Markeson, 2011),

Why are vulnerable populations always the ones to suffer most in an emergency incident?

Generally vulnerable populations are constantly at disadvantage compare to all those who don’t have any special needs or special circumstances, this population includes chronic diseases, age, low income, immigrant, non-English speaking, homeless, physical and mental health disabilities. The venerable populations suffer the most during an emergency incident because they might have acute medical conditions, chronic diseases, pediatric or geriatric needs. among other conditions like such as Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, heart disease, diabetes. Some of this populations faces special challenges due to the need they have for their medications, special treatment and care that needs to be provided in order to function and most of them with chronic diseases are especially vulnerable to infections (Reilly & Markeson, 2011).
