Literary Analysis – First Draft

Violence against children

Both poems “The Boy & The Belt” and “Getting Ready to Say I Love You to My Dad, It Rains,” Jose Olivarez presents his relationship with his father. And in either one is clear how bad the relationship is between father and son. In “The Boy & The Belt”, both characters have very distinct personalities: the father figure is severe and merciless. On the other hand, the boy is genuine and fragile. Olivarez shows perfectly to the readers how the father demonstrates affection and love for his son, and also shows how the son sees his father’s behavior like a gesture of love and carrying. Also, in “Getting Ready to Say I Love You to My Dad, It Rains”, the genuine child also understands his father’s actions like a sign of love, but besides that Olivarez describes how hard it is to the son to tell “I love you” to his father, emphasizing that saying that to a cat, to the sky or even to the mirror would be easier.

Olivarez describes the relationship between both characters pretty well and also how love can be seen from different perspectives, from different kind of people all over the world. Besides that, the poems also can be useful the remind the readers about one of the oldest problems in society: violence against children. No matter what kind of violence that is: maltreatment, psychological etc., by whoever, its parents or a third person, these actions have become a crime.

Unfortunately, even after the law came into force, violence against children is something we know it is real and happens in different and many ways. I believe that most of the aggressors are usually people that also suffered violence during their childhood or grow up seeing children suffering maltreatment by their family expecting that the punishment would help with the child’s education.

What most of parents or aggressors do not know is that the violence, being them emotional or psychological, bullying or maltreatment has a huge impact on health and well-being of children, communities, and nations, resulting in death and others severe injuries, directly impacting those human beings living in society.
