The main objective of this exercise is to better understand ethics and the implications of ethical dilemmas, ethical conflicts in the workplace. This objective includes three parts: A. the ability to recognize and understand ethical dilemmas; B. the ability to identify the relevant stakeholders in each dilemma and their perspective, and; C. how to apply various ethical frameworks. There are four steps to this exercise:
Step 1:
Identify the professional field that you plan to enter upon graduation (e.g. Accounting, Finance, Sports Management, General Management, or Human Resources).
Step 2:
Identify three ethical concerns /dilemmas that are extremely significant in this professional area (e.g. accounting fraud). "Significance" can be determined in a variety of ways: its prevalence or frequency in the field; the number of professionals or companies involved; the degree of impact, amount of money involved; the number of stakeholders involved; length of time it has been going on; the amount of publicity, notoriety; specific people involved; or their personal or professional interest; an increasing or decreasing trend in their field i.e., Is the issue becoming more of a problem? Or is it getting worse?
For example, in the area of Finance, common ethical dilemmas are insider training, churning, deceptive loan practices, and embezzlement.
Step 3:
For each ethical dilemma chosen, identify the relevant stakeholders (e.g. a person with an interest or concern in the situation) involved in the ethical dilemma. Explain what role each stakeholder plays in the dilemma. For example, in an embezzlement ethical dilemma, the stakeholders may be the employee who embezzles and the organization being embezzled from.
Step 4:
Find a real-world example in the news of one of the ethical dilemmas from your field that you chose (e.g. the Enron scandal, Amazon's employee mistreatment exposé in the New York Times in 2015).
