Receiving Feedback

Part of being an independent scholar is giving as well as receiving critical feedback on your work. Just as you worked to critically analyze others’ work for this course to find ways of improving upon past research, others will do the same of your work. This is never a personal attack, but rather meant to show areas in your work that could be strengthened and how. Nevertheless, it can still be hard for individuals to receive critical feedback. The assignment this week is aimed at helping you be able to receive feedback and incorporate it into your work.

However, keep in mind that as an independent scholar, you are welcome to ask questions or disagree with feedback. Yes, I said disagree!  Remember that you are working to become an independent scholar, which means you should be an expert in your content area(s).  As you have experienced in your literature search, there are a plethora of studies, many reviews, and various different conclusions that have (and can be) drawn from all the scholarly work.  In other words, it is normal to disagree and have scholarly debates.  However, note the term scholarly debates.  I emphasize this, because it is fine to disagree with another academic scholar, but your stance/opinion should be based in the scholarly literature (vs. simply your experience or feelings) and supported by specific data and information.  You may have even come across some of these debates in the literature.  Two readings this week, Gardner and Moran (2006) and Waterhouse (2006), are just one of many examples of healthy scholarly debates.
