Dr. Petko and Class, 

Climate change is a global health concern that has impacted my community. The earth’s temperature has warmed by 1.5 °F, the planet has been warming since 1900 but significant changes have occurred since 1970. Vermont’s weather is also changing, it’s becoming a warmer and wetter climate. Spring arrives two weeks earlier than it did in 1960 and winter arrives one week later. Air temperature is 4°F warmer in the winter and more than 2°F warmer in the summer. Rain fall in Vermont has increased by nearly 7 inches over the last 50 years (Climate Change, 2016). 

Electronic health records (EHR) can be used to pull data from communities to tell if health is being negatively affected by pollutants in that area. EHR data can be pulled by zip code, revealing disease trends via diagnostic codes. Using data from EHR can help determine trends and health care governments can anticipate an increase of hospital visits. An example would be allergies and infectious disease such as influenza have been known to follow a seasonal trend, however with the changes in the environment this has changed. EHR data can be used to determine new patterns and trends, thereby anticipating health care needs (Melamed, R. D, et al., 2014). 

A tweet by The Globe and Mail @globeandmail states “In the Northern Hemisphere, experts say the combination of higher temperatures allowing plants to bloom earlier and later, and higher CO2 levels that cause more pollen production, is the driving force behind why allergy seasons are getting worse” (The Globe and Mail, 2022). Community Health Nurses (CHN) “seek to ensure the attainment of health for all in a cost-effective, efficient, accessible health care system” (Nies, M. A., & McEwen, M., 2019, P. 284). CHN’s can help educate their patients regarding increased allergies as well as educating patients about telehealth services. Utilizing telehealth services can help decrease greenhouse gasses, helping with climate change.
