I think during this whole eight week course, learning about our nursing history, one thing has really resonated with me. I have truly valued the strength of nurses past- to be themselves and own their careers. They all had such courage to fight for change for the betterment of our careers. They stood up to doctors, men, and the continuous fight for development of our education. They never let challenge stand in their way. They never did any of this for acknowledgment, only for the positive change it would create for our career. We read about Florence Nightingale in our first week’s assignments. We learn about her strength and determination. Judd and Sitzman state that “Nightingale significantly influenced the evolution of modern nursing in the United States.” She was just one of many we can thank for our modern nursing today.
I think us, both male and female, as nurses today need to take that courage and advice and continue to make waves. We need to fight for our rights as a profession and the change these brave women of our past created. To help this continuation of change and growth I believe we need to never stop learning. Our education is a blessing, and by continuing to strive for growth, we are producing a fearless and educated future. We have more knowledge today, with the help of technology advances and more. This knowledge allows us to provide safe consistent nursing care. It also allows us to hold more advance roles. These roles include charge nurse, nurse managers, FNP’s and others. We now have a voice to make change happen, both for ourselves and our patients.
One thing we need to avoid is allowing others to take our voice. Continuing to fight for our rights as nurses by taking stands for patient ratios, equal pay, and safety, allows those in charge to know we are proud of who we are, and we won’t back down. We deserve to be treated equal and provide our best selves to our patients. We have read all about the history our nurses before us created; now it’s time to continue making history today for the nurses to come ahead of us.
