Hi Julie,

At least you are honest with your feelings, but I believe altruism is based a person's selflessness. I grew up with my sister who is the most selfish person I know, and it is something I always considered. I do a lot of things with sincerest intention with no expectations in return. This has left me open to being hurt and taken advantage. My husband lets me I know that I have a good heart because I always question is there more, I could be doing or how can I be better a mother or wife than the day before. It is generated by love, it is God's love, and my sunshine is my soul bursting outward.

Hello Professor and Classmates,

According to Gilovich et al. (2018), there are two evolutionary reasons for altruism which include kin selection and reciprocity. The theory behind kin selection suggests that people would be more inclined to help those who are related to them and thus share the same genes as them ensuring that those genes get passed on (Gilovich et al., 2018). While the theory behind reciprocal altruism is that there are many benefits to helping others such as the idea that others will return the favor at a later date (Gilovich et al., 2018). Furthermore,“Reciprocal altruism reduces the likelihood of dangerous conflict, helps overcome problems arising from scarce resources, and offers a basis for people to form alliances and constrain more dominant individuals”(Gilovich et al., 2018).

Best,

Sandra
