Topic: Emancipation Proclamation
Questions based on the primary source: What does the Emancipation Proclamation do? Summarize its key provisions in a few sentences. What were its limitations? Answer: The Emancipation Proclamation declared that all slaves help within the rebellious must be freed. Although it was a huge step it had limitations. The only states this applied to was to those who succeeded from the union.The reason for this was because although Abraham Lincoln didn’t support slavery he wanted to prevent the union from suceeding.
Questions based on the secondary source: According to the historian Manisha Sinha, what role did African Americans play in the struggle for emancipation? Answer: During the Civil War, African Americans enlisted in the army. They were kept in seperate regiments, but they were still fighting in the military. The Black National Convention argued that “ if black men were good enough for "bullets," they were good enough for the "ballot." Along with literally fighting for their freedom, the full abolitionist sentiment was gaining more and more traction in the north. Why did President Lincoln issue the Emancipation Proclamation? How did the Proclamation change the nature of the war? Answer: President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation because the Union army was seeing more and more of an advantage the “contraband of war”. Along with that, Lincoln was being advised that the longer the Confederacy remained independent, the more likely it was to be recognized by foreign nations. So, in order to combat this, The Emancipation Proclamation was signed to tie the fight for a whole union with the righteousness of ending slavery. Most European nations had already banned it, so this strengthened the North’s foreign relations.
How did African Americans use their military service in the Union Army and Union Navy to claim their rights to citizenship and equality? Answer: African Americans were able to use their military service in their favor. They gained a lot of respect and by the end of the war they were able to claim their citizenship and were free. This also helped the Emancipation Proclamation get passed.
