Week 8 Govt
Book needed “GOVT 10” by Sidlow
8.1: What’s Going On? (Week 8)
A big part of the thrill of government and politics is the open discussion of politics—and you’ll be doing a lot of that here. Specifically:
1) Find an ONLINE news article about U.S. politics and/or the U.S. government that interests you, and read it.
2) Go to the DISCUSSION BOARD forum called “What’s Going On? (Week 8)”
3) Make a new thread, and make its title the article’s title.
4) Paste the address of the news article in your thread, summarize the article in at least 100 words in the space provided, and explain why this article is relevant to us as students of the U.S. government.
8.2: Posting: “The Media Bias in the Article You Just Posted”
One useful tool you need in your mental political toolbox, besides a very good malarkey detector (!) is the ability to sense bias in articles you read.
Trust me, there’s bias in everything written, because people (who are biased) wrote them. There may be a little, or there may be a LOT, but it’s there somewhere. It may be within the article, it may be in the title, or it might be the entire article itself and the context or timing it’s reported.
So find that bias in the article you posted in Assignment 10.2—specifically:
1) Read Chapter 4 carefully, particularly the section about the news media.
2) Go to the DISCUSSION BOARD forum called “8.2: The Bias I found
3) Explain, in at least 100 words, what bias is there in the article. If possible, explain why you think it’s as biased as it is.
