Week 1 - Relational leadership is a concept that had helped to shape the way I view leadership

and its responsibilities. The idea of leadership as a process of people acting together to enact

positive change is very important. Relational leadership does not view relationships as an

aspect of leadership, but as part of its definition and integral to all leadership (Exploring

Leadership, 2006, para. 4-6). I think this is slightly overlooked in other leadership definitions,

that may place relationships as only a piece of emotional intelligence, when it is truly a

fundamental aspect of leadership.

Week 2 - The situational leadership model has helped me define how to work with individuals

of differing levels of expertise and motivation. The influence behaviors have given me a new

way to view how to provide the correct amount of guidance and independence (The Center

for Leadership Studies, 2017, para. 7-10). It is not all encompassing in its insights, as every

employee is different, but have worked as a great baseline.

Week 3- Strategic thinking and planning is a vital piece for any management that has the

ability to plan long-term. The skill to define objectives and develop an action plan by breaking

down each objective into actionable tasks and goals has been influential on my leadership

(CSSP, 2019, para. 3-9). I have begun to ensure that my strategic plan is disseminated to the

lowest level along with the goals to reach it, so as to harmonize the efforts of the entire team

towards the strategic objective.

Week 4 - The idea of cultural intelligence, interacting effectively with people of different

cultures, is vital to my work in the military (Verghese, 2013, :10-1:15). We have people on

every team from many different cultures and backgrounds and must be able to work with

them all. I have been applying cultural intelligence without understanding what I was applying.

Understanding the concept in a logical sense now will allow me to teach the skills of cultural

intelligence to ensure that everyone on my team can work together as harmoniously as

possible.

Week 5 - Emotional Intelligence is a new concept in my idea of leadership, but one that has

changed the way I view interactions. Understanding the skills of self-awareness and self-

management allows one to regulate their actions in reference to their emotions (Harvard

Business Review, 2008, :45-2:30). In my line of work emotions can run very high. Emotional

Intelligence will aid me in ensuring that my communications are effective and that I have

quality interactions while understanding my emotional state.

Week 6 - Followership is the most important concept I have learned in this course. How to

build followership in an organization is a skill I will carry with me for the rest of my career. The

idea that credibility is linked directly to that followership is vital to every leader's daily

performance. Utilizing emotional intelligence to ensure that a leader has quality interactions

and makes quality decisions every day to build that credibility is simple and powerful (Gook,

2012, 2:25-3:30). Followership is an integral piece of leadership and one that cannot be

ignored or viewed as secondary.

Week 7 - Leader actions during a crisis has made an impact on how I view crisis management.

The comparison between Mark Zuckerberg and Kevin Johnson places those actions in

perspective. Johnson took immediate action, displayed emotional intelligence, and displayed

authentic leadership through taking responsibility. Zuckerberg on the other hand did none of

those things, which turned much of the public against him. Ensuring that a leader steps up to

take responsibility and truly frames the crisis to ensure that adequate measures are taken to

fix the problems that created the crisis are vital to crisis management within an organization

(George, 2018).

Hello Dennis,

Thank you for sharing a great post. I agreed with you on the information from week

five. Also, I think emotional intelligence is a vital concept. Emotional intelligence is

the ability to control, perceive, understand, manage, and evaluate emotions (Cherry,

2019, para.1). To effectively lead the organization, solve problems, or interact with

people a leader should have the ability of monitoring feelings, and emotions. It is a

significant factor to be aware of and handle feelings or passions (Goleman,2008,

0:58).

Great post Dennis !

I did not think of fellowship leading style to be that high on my list, but after

reading your views on fellowship leading I understand the power of influence with

creating followers. I have worked for some great managers and because they

created a great work environment I would go work for them anywhere. So creating

fellowship is extremely powerful.
