Regression

Focus

This week focuses on regression for statistical analysis. Use of regression in research is a quantitative approach used to examine the relationship between several variables.

Strengths and weaknesses of linear regression Linear regression is valued for its simplicity, interpretability, and ability to quantify relationships between variables while estimating the impact of predictors on an outcome. It is efficient, widely understood, and useful for prediction when assumptions are met. However, it relies on key assumptions (linearity, normality, homoscedasticity, and independence), is sensitive to outliers, and may perform poorly when relationships are nonlinear or when multicollinearity exists among predictors. Additionally, it does not imply causation and may be limited in handling complex real-world data.

Difference between logistic and multiple regression Multiple regression is used when the dependent variable is continuous and examines the relationship between one outcome and multiple independent variables. In contrast, logistic regression is used when the dependent variable is categorical (typically binary, such as yes/no or presence/absence) and estimates the probability of an outcome occurring. While multiple regression produces coefficients that reflect changes in the outcome variable, logistic regression produces odds ratios that describe the likelihood of the outcome given the predictors.

Objectives

· Explain how the prediction concept and regression could be a useful analytic tool in nursing

· Differentiate between logistic and multiple regression

· Analyze multiple and logistic output and a published study

Deliverables

· Discussion ( Self-Study. Not Required): Correlation

"  Post answers to the following:

· What is the relationship between a correlation matrix and multiple regression? How might they be used together?

· What is the difference between logistic and multiple regression?

· Assignment ( Required):  Critical Assessment

· Only select an article identified from the assignment source.

· DO NOT select a random article from the library DO NOT use the videos for this assignment

· Quiz ( Required):  Regression DUE 10:59pm CST on Day 7 of Week 8

· Carefully read requirements and guidelines.

Reminders!

· Thoroughly read the syllabus.

· Review learning resources.

· Review ALL grading rubrics to clearly identify expectations and requirements.

This is just a heads up for the week 8 assignment. Please note a snippet below of what is expected (see week 8 for full assignment information). Be sure to follow course guidelines AND review the rubric. You must select a research study article from the course resources and use the correct form. I highly recommend using an article from a peer reviewed journal. If you have any questions be sure to let me know.

"To prepare:

· Download the Critical Assessment, Appendix E2 Single Study Evidence Appraisal Tool.

· Choose one published  quantitative study from any presented in resources in Weeks 1–7 and use Bissett et al. (2025) tools to critically appraise the research study (choose any  quantitative study used in the course).

The Assignment

Present your analysis using the critical appraisal tool and the individual evidence tool in Appendix E2. Blank forms are provided in a template for the submission."

It is important that you include the complete and correct  APA-formatted reference citation at the end of Appendix E2: Single Study Evidence Appraisal Toolfor your quantitative study assignment. This will allow easier retrieval and verification during the grading process.

WEEK 8 ASSIGNMENT:

To prepare:

The Assignment

Present your analysis using the critical appraisal tool and the individual evidence tool in Appendix E2. Blank forms are provided in a template for the submission.
