Answer the following questions with substantive answers. In your answers be sure to refer to the texts in question with relevant page number refences, while also putting answers in your own words.

1. According to the authors of “The Racial Rules of Income” what are common explanations for the income inequality gap between black and white workers and what do these explanations get wrong?

2. What were some beneficial political and economic programs/developments for black workers in the Post-Civil Rights era that led toward greater economic inclusion and helped reduce employment/income inequality? (think in terms of new political programs, new job sectors, and new ways of organizing labor)

3. What are the economic shifts from the 1980s to our present day that were detrimental and how did they roll back the post-Civil Rights gains in employment and income?

4. In the Weyher and Zeitlin article what was significant about the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) for addressing racial inequality in employment and income? Explain how the CIO’s aims of organization differed from other union organizations (like the AFL) in terms of the pursuit of external and internal goods as emphasized by virtue ethics. In other words, what were the higher internal goods (virtuous qualities) that they consciously pursued and how did this practice also allow for a greater gain of external goods for all workers regardless of race (wages, employment, working conditions)?

5. In the face of increasing deindustrialization, what do the Weyher and Zeitlin mention as new sectors and opportunities for unionization today that can continue the CIO’s pursuit of internal goods/virtues of interracial unity (think of their recent example of the SEIU).

6. According to Jessica Nembhard what is it specifically about co-ops that can empower black communities in their fight against institutional racism?
