Running head: COACHING 1

COACHING 4

***Respond no more than (150 words) Boutet

As a life-long procrastinator, I have been working diligently to change my habits in order to become more efficient throughout my career. When I was younger, I never accomplished homework or tasks ahead of time, only when it came down to the last 24 hours, or few days. While I always completed my work on time, I often spent late nights into mornings working on an assignment that could have easily been accomplished days ahead of time. As I have aged, my philosophy has shifted as I now try to complete tasks and assignments as soon as I have the time, as opposed to waiting until I am running out of time. As a coach, I encourage my players to take care of themselves and complete their work early, so that they are able to get enough sleep and recover physically. If players have worked throughout the night to complete an assignment, they will most likely be unrested and unprepared for practice, thereby lowering their level of play. While much of time management is a choice, there are some factors that are out of one’s control, and learning to navigate those challenges is an aspect to time management (Find strategies to manage your time, 2012).

The three strategies that are most important to me as a coach include setting aside time to plan, creating a checklist of items that need to be accomplished, and setting limits (Human Kinetics, Inc). Every Sunday I create a plan, or schedule, of my week which incorporates the practices I need to run and the meetings I need to attend, in addition to setting aside time for tasks such as homework, answering emails, planning practices, and completing other errands. I often create this in a checklist format in which I can cross off items that I have completed. Not only does this keep me organized, but it gives me a great sense of accomplishment when I am able to check off a task. Additionally, this checklist helps me establish a clear understanding of when I have time to take on extra projects or work- which in turn, enables me to set limits on who I can help or how much I can take on during any given week. I have found that creating this schedule and blocking off time for things such as homework and emails has helped me work through my procrastination habits and become more productive on a daily basis.

One strategy that I have not yet used but am curious to try is creating times in which I am unavailable except in the case of an emergency (Human Kinetics, Inc). By setting time aside for uninterrupted work, I would be creating a space for me to work distraction-free and accomplish more than I might with interruptions. As an assistant coach for a collegiate volleyball program, I receive calls from my head coach regularly, and it can often disrupt other work that I might be doing for my high school program, club team, or school. Setting aside time for interruption-free work would allow me to accomplish tasks efficiently and therefore create more time for me to collaborate with our head coach.

A coaching job position requires a lot of time organizing, planning, and strategy to be an effective coach in any sport. Even though I am not a coach yet, I look at how many highly successful coaches like Mike Krzyzewski, Tom Izzo, or other college basketball coaches handle the high-pressure job to keep the basketball program intact. How they manage their time to keep making the school alumni, boosters, and donors happy, each of the coaches will, of course, manage their time management to meet their appointments, recruitments schedules, or meetings.

For my philosophy based on effective coaching to manage the time to meet deadlines, I need to develop a schedule planner and plan. Always plan to so in time it will changes as the times go. The coaches will expect an unexpected situation that may require their time to deal with any issues. I will use a blackboard to make any schedules, meetings, and strategies for the upcoming schedule and incorporate that into my portable schedule planner. It is also better to delegate some of the work like important recruitment or transfers of the new players to the assistant coaches. That way, we can meet and go over during lunch meeting to exchange information and strategize for an upcoming season more effectively. Gavin (2006) brings up a good assessment regarding commitment that requires all of the coaches to become successful. Each coach needs to commit to a motive to make the basketball program successful and fun. Mulhauser (2012) believes that each coach needs to understand their motivation to improve time management. All the coaches can do is plan ahead and manage their time to meet the deadlines more effectively.

Based on ASEP's 15 ways to improve your time management, I have identified four strategies to be effective time management:

1. Plan by clearly defining your goals for the immediate future.

2. Set realistic goals.

3. Develop systems for completing routine work efficiently.

4. Delegate tasks to others when possible.

Regardless, If I am not a coach yet, I would like to add one important strategy to keep the time management more effectively by using file cabinets which Hoch (2000) suggested is best to use. Any coaches using the cabinets is the best way to minimize unnecessarily cluttered on the desk, using too many appointments or schedules that can overwhelm any coaches, preventing the coaches from planning an effective practice schedule or making an appointment with anyone and one meeting with any players. Coaches can use file cabinets to keep track of any players, their personal information, their contact information, any issues at school, and so forth. Coaching can be demanding, but if each coach is motivated and committed to their job, nothing can stop them from wanting to be a coach.

Week 8 Assignment: Final Project - Critical Analysis of a CoachTop of Form

For your Final Project, students will write an 8-12 page essay detailing the coaching philosophy, coaching style, and principles of coaching of an active or former high school, college, or professional coach of their choice (any sport). Students will provide biographical information of the coach they selected; including their name, coaching resume (list of coaching assignments), and specific career highlights and accomplishments (awards, championships, significant feats, etc.). Then, students must describe the coaching philosophy, coaching style, and principles of coaching used that helped make the coach they selected a successful coach. Please be specific with your description and validate your major points by supporting facts with references where applicable. For example, do not just state the coach was a great leader. Instead, find quotes from the coach's former players, athletic administrators, fellow coaches, assistants, etc. or published articles that truly demonstrate how this coach was a great leader. Explain in detail what characteristics you admire most about this coach. Then, explain which qualities you try to model as well as a coach. Describe what you have learned from this coach that has or will help you in becoming a better coach. In the final portion of your term paper, explain what coaching objectives you have developed your coaching philosophy on. Identify each of the three broad categories of the following objectives in winning, athletes having fun, and development of athletes. Clearly identify priorities and the relative importance of each of these three objectives, paying close attention to the role that winning has in relation to other objectives.

Submission: Students will submit this Final Project through a Word document. The paper must be between 8-12 pages in length, not including the Title and Reference page. At least three (3) scholarly resources must be cited and referenced in your essay. Remember to provide supporting evidence for your content to validate factual information.
