Behaving ethically and doing what is popular may not always go hand in hand. Business ethics is defined as “accepted principles of right or wrong governing the conduct of businesspeople.” (Hill, Schilling, Jones, 2017, p. 369). It is ethically defensible to outsource production if it is a matter of staying competitive that will allow for long term success. Tough decisions must be made related to strategy, production, and profits. Employees cannot always see the big picture and higher wages in a home country may result in the closure of a business entirely, which will put even more people out of work than outsourcing.

I believe it to be unethical to outsource production to get rich quick, solve a short term problem, not care about working conditionings, or if the move will only benefit stock holders and not the general public or employees. “Unethical behavior often arises in a corporate setting when managers decide to put the attainment of their own personal goals, or the goals of the enterprise, above the fundamental rights of one or more stakeholder groups.” (Hill, Schilling, Jones, 2017, p. 371).

Another ethical component of outsourcing must be the conditions in which the workers work in. It is unethical to outsource for lower wagers, poor working conditions, and unsafe working environments. For an outsourcing decision to be truly based on strategy and ethics, the workers in the developing countries must be at the focus.
