I have selected the Christian historical drama series which depicts the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, directed By Dallas Jenkins, entitled “The Chosen”.

Chosen is a new sort of series, which relied upon “Crowdfunding” to release each episode in an App. It is the first of its kind and has garnered millions of fans the world over since its release on Christmas Eve in 2017. It won the GMA Dove award in 2022 and continues to be one of the most looked forward to series in creation as far as nearly every Jesus follower who has seen it is concerned.  As one critic put it, “The bottom line is, The Chosen is a piece of art. (It’s not perfect, but it’s darn close.):” (Allotta, 2021). As said on Lingoapp.com, “ The Chosen is a groundbreaking historical drama based on the life of Jesus, seen through the eyes of those who knew him. Set against the backdrop of Jewish oppression in first-century Israel, the seven-season show shares an authentic and intimate look at Jesus’ revolutionary life and teachings. The global phenomenon has garnered over 500-million-episode views worldwide, and over 110 million people have watched at least one episode. It’s available on major streaming services like Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Peacock while all seasons remain free in  The Chosen mobile and TV apps. Viewer support through tax-deductible donations fund production and have helped make The Chosen the largest fan-supported entertainment project of all time”. (Lingoapp.com, 2023)

This series has generated a new interest in the bible for many people and drawn new fans in to seeking to understand Christianity. It had a particular effect of unifying Christians in the dark days of Covid lockdown and helped to fuel the Tik-Tok revival in the youth of the world on that platform, bringing to life the daily lives of those who actually knew and walked with Jesus. Though not art in the same sense as the renaissance art of days past, it is in its own way a brilliant art form, giving fullness and depth to the New Testament stories by using the episodic approach to storytelling popularized by Streaming services like Netflix, since they began producing shows like “House of Cards”, in 2011.
