“encounter values conflicts in our careers, the way we want to live and the things we want to accomplish seem in conflict with the expectations of our clients, our peers, our bosses and our organizations. A look at the Concept of sustainability

Conventional business practices

Sustainability concept Wholistic business practices

Philanthropy does not equal Sustainability

Conventional business practices have artificial time boundaries of “it has to get done now and it has to make money to make sense”

and is based on a financial return for immediate gain

Concept of sustainability focuses on the long term, not the short-term goals

choosing investments that pay off in the long term

ensuring employees are happy

looking at the TBL: environmental, economical, and social aspects over time

Clarification that looking at environmental and social aspects is not to be confused with Philanthropy.

Keller states her father always said he didn’t like the, “Concept of giving back, because why did you take it in the first place”

Need to look at it wholistically of your business making a positive impact in society

Sustainability requires that the message be delivered is a way that is properly framed in order to influence others to join the sustainability efforts, whether that be stakeholders, consumers, or employees. People need to understand WIIFT, What’s In It For Them, as presented by John Daley on Influencing Others. When people understand how it relates to them, why it is relevant, they can then identify with it. https://youtu.be/areuWvUiO_Y

2

Sustainability Impacts society

Positive flow effect and the role of each:

Businesses

Government

Non-Profits

In conventional business practices corporations focus on short term financial bottom-line return, in turn governments work to fix the environmental and social practices that the corporations are being regulated on, but not focusing on, while the non-profits voice their concerns on these bad practices. This cycle creates a negative vacuum, with no one working together.

A more balanced system would be sustainable business practices. Beginning with the businesses incorporating sustainable aspects into their practices where then government gives incentives for positive behavior, instead of regulation penalties. Lastly then non-profits promote businesses that are practicing sustainable efforts. It is important for society for everyone to be working together in a positive framework.

Key decision point that people make, doing something good for their career or make money

The view that non-profit work does good work and environmentally conscience and those that make money are not environmentally conscience.

Leadership

Simon Sinek’s TED talk on How great leaders inspire action.

The Golden Circle and answering “Why?”

“Good leaders stand in front of criticism and step aside for praise,” Christine Keller.

Keller states that if you build respect and credibility then people will follow you.

Simon’s Golden Circle

When organizations know “why” they do what they do, they can communicate from the inside and lead. The “why’ answers

What is your purpose?

What’s your belief?

Why does your organization exist?

Why should others care?

Keller’s personal mission is clean water, a basic need around the world. Works on a clean water treatment technology that is sustainable and saves lives. It is both good for the world and is good business. She is practicing leadership in a cause she believes in, is respected in the community and has expertise in the international engineering.

4

Industry leaders are coming together and saying environmental design is important. Therefore, they are creating industry standards to reflect that sustainability mission.

Setting Industry Standards such as:

Zero landfill footprint

Employee wellness programs

Renewable Energy

Green supply chain

Christina Keller’s personal experiences have influenced her views and passion regarding cultures and sustainability. She learned early on that though cultures are different at the core they all have a “sameness”.

Social networks are valued in countries other than the U.S.

The U.S. values economics over people – little social network

Costa Rica values the importance of bio-economical diversity –promotes sustainability

These experiences and influences have given her the confidence and practice to voice her values.
