Many companies turn to outsourcing production to companies in the developing world to reduce costs or to increase shareholders’ benefits. Although it is typically viewed as a company being money hungry, there are circumstances that allow a company to ethically outsource production. A company can ethically outsource production if it is a competitive necessity. If a company must reduce their costs to remain competitive in order to continue operating, it can be seen as a reason to ethically outsource to a developing country. It is important that when a company does outsource production, they must translate those ethics to the developing country and use the standards of the host nation there as well. It is important for the company to consider employment practices and human rights.
While researching this topic, I came across an article which states that Verizon will outsource IT positions to India in the near future. Verizon states that they are laying off about 1,000 employees but the employees mention that it’s closer to 5,000. Binder (2018), states that there are attorneys working with the employees and that “while the workers — again — fear for their future, corporate executives are expected to increase their bonuses”. This is heartbreaking to hear that a company would increase their executive bonuses at the cost of others’ careers.
