Doing the Works of Jesus

C. Peter Wagner

THE PROBLEM

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and

greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

John 14:12

• The timing:

Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I

do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send

Him to you. John 16:7

• The source of power

Hypothesis: The Holy Spirit was the source of all of Jesus’ power during His earthly ministry. Jesus exercised no power of or by Himself. We can do the same or greater things than Jesus did because we have access to the same power source.

THE TWO NATURES OF JESUS

• Divine (100%):

• Human (100%):

2. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO NATURES

A. The problem of Mark 13:32

"Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 29So you also, when you see these things happening, know that it is near, at the very doors. 30Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. 32But of that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

Mark 13:28-32

“3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled?”

Mark 13:3-4

B. Some traditional explanations

1) Total Mystery Theory.

2) Human Jesus Theory.

3) Two Channel Theory.

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

John 1:1,14

C. Incarnation theology

1) Basis: Philippians 2:5-8

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7but

made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a servant, and

coming in the likeness of men. 8And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of

death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:5-8

Philippians 2:5-8.

a. Jesus was God. b. In some way He became unequal. c. How did He become unequal? d. He agreed to become obedient

during His incarnation.

2) The nature of Jesus’ obedience: a. It was voluntary. b. It was temporary. c. It totally suspended the use of

His divine attributes. d. The only nature Jesus used on

earth was His human nature.

3)Jesus as the “second Adam.”

And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being. The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. 46However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. 47The first

man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven.

1 Corinthians 15:45-47

a. 1 Corinthians 15:45-47.

e. Both tempted the same way.

b. Both created. c. Both had covenant of obedience. d. Neither contaminated with

original sin.

Test: - Breaking the covenant of obedience

- Adam: the forbidden fruit

- Jesus: using divine attributes

4. Jesus’ power Q: Where did He get His power?

Hypothesis: the Holy Spirit was the source of all Jesus’ power during His earthly ministry. Jesus exercised no power of or by Himself.

a. God anointed Jesus ..."how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the

devil, for God was with Him.“

Acts 10:38

b. Jesus depended on the Father

Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you,

the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for

whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.

John 5:19

c. He had a natural life like ours

d. He was very sensitive to the Father

And He said to them, “Why is it that you sought Me? Did you not

know that I must be about My Father’s business?”

Luke 2:49

e. He learned obedience

though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things

which He suffered. Hebrews 5:8

f. He cast out demons by the Spirit of God

But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has

come upon you.

Matthew 12:28

g. He judged by authority from the Father

“For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,”

John 5:22

h. He was invincible because of the Father

“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again.

18No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command

I have received from My Father.”

John 10:17-18

i. He accepted worship because He still possessed His divine attributes.

Ø Three wise men.

“saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” Matthew 2:2

Ø Blind man.

“Then he said, “Lord, I believe!” And he worshipped Him.” John 9:38

Ø Demon-possessed man.

“But when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshipped Him.” Mark 5:6

5)When did the obedience end? a. The cross

b. After the resurrection

He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

Phil. 2:8

6Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, "Lord, will You at this time restore the Kingdom to Israel? Acts 1:6

7And He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority."

Acts 1:7

D. What does this mean for us today?
