Running head: PRACTICE PROBLEM 1

PRACTICE PROBLEM 3

Identify the selected practice problem.

Similar to exercising and keeping fit, and nutrition, sleep is an important impact of the health and well-being of an individual. Sleep health is often underrated and overlooked. Sleep is a basic requirement for the health and development of an infant, child and adolescent. In adults, sleep health is crucial in having a safer and more productive day. In the United States, about 25 per cent of adults report insufficient rest or sleep at least fifteen out of thirty days ("Sleep health | Healthy people 2020," n.d.). Among working-age adults, poor sleeping habits are very common and if left untreated they determine basic patterns of behavior that affect interpersonal relationships, family health and work relationships negatively. Sleep disorders and chronic sleep loss have become a burden to public health which has resulted in many health issues.

Sleepiness, insomnia and fatigue can increase the chance of mishaps such as industrial and motor vehicle accidents, and medical errors which will result in reduced productivity. In the United States, being a short sleeper; which is a person who sleeps less than 6 hours a day has seen a significant increase in the last three decades ("Sleep health | Healthy people 2020," n.d.). A major factor to this is competition between the lifestyle of a person, employment and sleep schedules. Sleep health education programs and promotion strategies need to be introduced in workplaces that will promote better work schedule patterns. Without proper sleep health education, most individuals prioritize other activities over sleep such as working late in the office. If left untreated chronic sleep and sleep disorders an individual will be at a higher risk of obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes as well as early death. Adequate sleep is necessary for one to work effectively and safely and to prevent diabetes by supporting the metabolism.

Describe an evidence-based intervention to address the practice problem.

Sleep health can be as a result of insomnia. An evidence-based intervention to address sleep health is music therapy. Not having enough sleep or finding it difficult to stay asleep has been associated with impaired mental health as well as impaired physical health. Research shows that even without the use of any medical treatment, listening to music has been seen to improve the subjective sleep quality of an individual. This evidence-based intervention is easy and safe to administer (Jespersen et al., 2015). Sleep is improved through music because music calms parts of the autonomic nervous system which leads to reduced blood pressure, lower heart rate, slower breathing and a good night’s sleep.

Create an informational population health "Tweet" as part of a social marketing intervention.

Who is getting a good night’s sleep? I can tell you not many of us. Inadequate sleep contributes to both physical and mental illnesses. You can easily fix this by knowing the cause of your bad habit and create a good sleep routine. #SleepHealthy.

Identify one measurable outcome to the "Tweet".

One measurable outcome to the “Tweet” will be the number of retweets using the hash tag as well as the number of individuals who have responded using the hash tag #SleepHealthy. This will allow me to know the number of individuals who received the tweet and in their responses, they will share which interventions work best for them and their effects on their lives.
