Web 2.0 Phenomenon

Web 2.0 is a social web that merges human society with a network of computers in a way that promotes information sharing. While the use of Web 2.0 provides an opportunity to design, develop and use the internet in a way that information sharing is enhanced, it also comes with additional security challenges (Rudman & Bruwer, 2016). When used in an organization, Web 2.0 increases enterprise threat by up to three times making productivity losses, vulnerability increases and data leaks.

Web 2.0 means that the old ways of protection on the internet does not work hence making it hard to reduce threats. Consequently, some of the security needs for web 2.0 include a lack of adequacy of traditional web filtering. Also, their web content is non-static making identification difficult. Also, high bandwidth can hinder the availability of web content. Finally, there is difficulty in containing user-generated content.

Some secure software development strategies that can support application security should be used. First, there is the validation of the user input where users validate their access on the screen. In this measure, there is the provision of authority to access web applications that are interactive. An evaluation of web 2.0 applications is necessary to identify vulnerabilities during validation. Another measure is to eliminate the use of default configurations of web servers. Used by organizations and often neglected to be reconfigured, default configuration makes it easy for hackers to detect and exploit weaknesses. Continuous checking for web server changes and readjustment will reduce chances for attacks (Rudman & Bruwer, 2016). Thirdly, a company should employ encryption for data security during transit. Finally, organizations can also use protected servers for data storage. Proper research is necessary before making a choice into the servers to use for data storage.
