Organization, effective communication, and a comprehensive coaching philosophy are some of the keys to most successful coaches. Coaches at all levels often meet with their players, parents of players, and coaching staff as a group at the start of a sports season. For this Final Project, students will develop a presentation in PowerPoint that provides your players, their parents, and your coaching staff with valuable information that will assist others in understanding various aspects about your program. Some examples of this information can include: Coaching Philosophy, Team Rules, Coaches Responsibilities, Player Conduct, How Players are selected for the team, How playing time is determined, Travel Guidelines, Training Programs, Sample Practice Plans, Motivational Messages, Practice Expectations, Game Expectations, Offensive and Defensive Philosophies, etc. Do not limit yourself to the examples I provided. Instead, use the one's you feel are most important to you as a coach and create some of your own unique topics to discuss/explain for this meeting. Only include information pertinent to demonstrating how you coach and manage your program. Do not worry about creating information that is not representative of your coaching philosophy, style, and leadership; such as game schedules, insurance forms, permission slips, eligibility requirements, etc. You DO NOT have to include this type of information in your Handbook. Submission: Students must submit a PowerPoint presentation which includes at least 15 slides, not including the APA-compliant Title and Reference Pages. Additionally, students must write and submit an outline of your presentation in a word document and submit. The outline should demonstrate an organized list and brief description of each "section" or "topic" you cover. The outline should act as a guide for you to present your slides to the audience. Earlier in the term, I sent you a PowerPoint titled, "Start with an Outline." Use it as a guide to compose an Alpha-Numeric Outline of your presentation. These do not have to be written out in essay style, but rather an outline style which helps you cover all of the main areas you want to cover in this meeting. Students must cite at least two references at the end of the presentation. |

The competition level of youth sports has raised tremendously since the days of our youth experience. Travel ball and select teams have taken the place of local leagues and the price parents are paying for competition and status are remarkably high. This may place added pressure on the youth athlete to perform at the highest levels ensuring a collegiate athletic scholarship as their ultimate goal. This could cause stress and depression leading to use of recreational drugs, or the belief that performance enhancing drugs are needed to create an advantage. This discussion board will be answered from the perspective of a head varsity coach in Ohio High School softball which falls under the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) as the governing board.
The need for a drug policy is a must for any high school athletic team. The school should have a drug policy in place for being a student athlete at the school. The head coach should establish a no tolerance policy also and remind their athletes that they must report any perceived wrongful use of recreational or performance enhancing drugs. The head coach should use a waiver for parents to sign to warn prospective student athletes of the mandatory policy for random drug testing required by the OHSAA throughout the season. The waiver may contain verbiage like, “I understand that my son/daughter/ward, when participating in any athletic program will be subjected to initial and random urine testing throughout the calendar year, and if they refuse, will not be allowed to practice or participate in any athletic activities” (Purtell, 2020). I have read the consent on the reverse of this form and agree to its terms. This policy will be introduced and taught during the preseason brief to parents/players/coaches within the program. This would be conducted via a Power Point Presentation and bringing in guest speakers with further knowledge on the subject is recommended.
Coaches have a tremendous opportunity to assist when it comes to educating our youth on the dangers of drugs and alcohol; however, the coach must understand his role when it comes to providing care. The head coach should remain supportive through the process when identifying a drug problem with a student athlete to ensure recidivism does not occur. The coach should provide resources for assistance to student athletes if they break the code and are found to have used drugs or alcohol. Aiding athletes once they have been referred for help include supporting the athlete during treatment and discussing with teammates how to help the athlete rejoin the team (Shollenberger, 2021). Drug testing is required by many high school sports athletic associations as OHSAA requires. Although I believe there are many legal hurdles with such policies, they are important to identify and assist student athletes that may test positive.

Illegal drug use is becoming a problem with young adults. There have been plenty of instances that I smelled marijuana odor on players. These were not players, but athlete’s that I know. I take time to talk to the athlete’s, and let them know that what they are doing is not cool, and not smart. We as coaches have to reach the children young. They are being influenced that their is nothing wrong with taking drugs..
As a coach I have a no drug policy. Coaching at the recreation level, and travel basketball I am unable to test athletes. My players will know that drugs will not be tolerated on the team. If a player test positive during a drug test the player will be suspended from the team. The player will undergo treatment, and if the player successfully completes the treatment program then we can discuss the player rejoining the team. The coaching staff, and myself will have classes where we discuss illegal drug use with athletes. This will be continuous training. We will not just talk about it just once we have to continuously talk about drugs to our athlete’s. Some athletes use drugs to get that competitive edge (Wilson 2015). We have to teach the athlete there are better ways the athlete can become better without the use of drugs.
Coaches have the potential to help athletes with drug addictions. We have the potential to do this, because coaches are mentors, and understand the pressure that the athlete is under. If the athlete is talented that athlete will have people in their ear pushing them to do better, and get quicker and stronger (Villa 2019). As a coach you can understand what they are going through, and mentor them through the process. To show players that we are against drug we will not only hold classes, but we will also have signs hanging around in the gym, and locker room.
I have no problem with athlete’s being drug tested. Drug testing helps keep the playing fields leveled. If there are athlete’s taking drugs to get an unfair advantage they should get caught so that they can get the treatment that is needed. The young athlete does not know the damage that drugs can do to the body. They are not learning what the side effects are they only see the good the drug has done for others. The text provided recommendations for athletes that are using drugs. I agree with the recommendations. If a player on my team is using drugs the parents will immediately be notified. The main thing is getting help for the athlete. Making sure the athlete gets the treatment that is needed for the athlete to be mentally stable. To educate athlete’s on drug abuse I believe that coaches have to continue to have classes throughout the year to discuss drug abuse. Coaches have to build a relationship with their athlete’s. Sometimes the signs are right in front of our eyes if we would have took the time to learn our athletes. If possible have players who let drugs end their athletic careers come and talk to the team. Coaches also have to ensure that we are doing what is best for the athlete. We have to ensure that we are helping them become the best athlete they can be so they do not have to turn the drugs.
