Buffer overflow happens when the data enters the memory block exceeds its string length or data capacity and then overwrites the memory addresses values. The attack during the process can cause detrimental harm such as system error, crash, incorrect result, or in the worst cases allow attackers to enter the system to modify internal variables. Buffer flow attacks can be categorized into stack-based overflow and heap-based overflow depending on the location of the buffer. The attack can also be coincident as the programming is weak originally or it can be deliberately targeted by attackers. It also varies based on the operating system and the programming languages. There are various ways to prevent or protect the attacks from buffer overflow. The data execution and prevention (DEP) is in the category of host-based defense mechanism and is inbuilt into operating systems to prevent or protect buffer overflow.
