Displacements

Displacements

After viewing the overlaid maps, what opportunities and hardships did the influx of European settlers have? Keep in mind that Native peoples are not one people. The different groups are just that different. Each has their own culture, traditions, and histories.

The “Walking Purchase”

What was the Walking Purchase?

What did the Delaware (Lenni Lenape) complain about, and what was the Iroquois’ response?

Further west: The Rise of Sioux, Osage, and Comanche

Sioux dominated the northern Great Plains by the end of the 1700s due to the use of horses and access to guns.

In the east-central plains, between Missouri and Arkansas rivers, the Osage grow in power by controlling trade.

By 1750s, Comanche dominate much of Oklahoma and Texas. They effectively limit Spanish control in the region.
