Manushi Doshi:

The idea of Web as a platform is introduced in Web 2.0. It represents a social, creative, collaborative and interactive web. Some popular examples of Web 2.0 are YouTube, Facebook, MySpace.com. People can create and share their own content like blogs, videos etc. While there are advantages like improved look and feel of the internet it also comes with security and cyber attack concerns.

Since anyone is allowed to upload content using Web 2.0, there is a high risk of hackers uploading malicious content to this sites. Hackers take advantage of the trust between the visitors/developers and the site owners. As the content uploading and updating process gets more decentralized, the authentication and trust worthiness mechanism is a major consideration. Through Web 2.0 sites, socializing online is a new way to network which gives rise to malware attacks. As a result, there are two categories of threats by social networking sites i.e. technical and social. In terms of technical threat, it means through Web 2.0 millions of people uploads content and at the same time malwares are posted by malicious users on the same sites. In terms of social threat, it means people post their personal information on the social media sites which sometimes result in to phishing attack.

Invisible attacks are created using AJAX queries by the hackers since the code is encrypted in transit using SSL and never revealed on the website. This is due to AJAX can query the hidden web or backend web services. It is not known by the URL filtering solution that which site is malicious since the parameter to activate this malicious AJAX script is unknown. As a result, the attackers can steal the confidential information and insert malicious script in to the host site. Rights to protect user data is also a major concern using Web 2.0. A web site based on the latest programming techniques has greater attack chances since it interacts more with the browser.

There should be some form of vulnerability assessment and testing for the application used in a business environment which processes personal or confidential information. A secure SDLC life cycle ensures that activity like code review and penetration testing be an integral part of development effort. With it in the implementation one should educate themselves and other coworkers regarding the best secure coding methods and security based frameworks.

The internet technology has become increasingly important to most people, most people in the current world use the internet regularly. Therefore, businesses should strive to maintain high visibility on the web because of the following reasons; it gives the business the competitive advantage; there is always a significant benefit for first movers in any business, those first to market business mostly end up having more share of the company (Kent, 2008). Excellent visibility gives a business protected position in the market. Business should take advantage of the increased number of people using the internet by carving its presence online. The second point is that Visibility increases the targeted traffic, Business experience better conversion figures through pre-qualified traffic. Company visibility on the search engines improves the market position and branding. Credibility and Top-mind –awareness is as a result of a solid performance in the search engines results page (SERP’s).

More people will trust a company that has secured a better brand are found on the first-page organic search under a particular keyword. Another advantage is facilitated responsiveness and measurable control. Marketers can use analytical tools to monitor the website's properties using some specific criteria. The appropriate action for item tinkering preferred by the search engines can be used to derive the information from the matrix, and this improves the performance in the SERPS’s and page rankings. The advantage of split testing, consistent monitoring, and responsive action is that it can protect, predict or improve the positioning of the brand within the SERP’s. Finally, excellent visibility translates to better returns on investment (ROI). Over a given period, the cost of SEO could be negligible especially if marketers earn and maintain a solid ranking. A small investment in the optimization results in huge returns over an extended period.

The idea of how search engines determine the relevance of its results is interesting when a search for a piece of information online, the search engine goes through billions of documents and returns with only the useful information according to the user's query (Gruenbaum, 2015). After determining the relevance, it also ranks it according to the popularity, SEO is primarily meant to influence the importance and the popularity of a website. The search engines have its own primary functions; crawling and building an index and giving the sued the list of ranked site that has more relevance.

The web pages on the internet servers are bound together in a linked structure, the use of the links is to allow “crawlers,” also known as automated robots, and the link connects to billions of documents (Juon, Greiling & Buerkle, 2011). In the past, search engines used to find the pages with the right words simply, but over the years, a better way has been devised to consider hundreds of factors that influence the relevance before displaying the results. Search engines dwell on the underlying assumption that popular site has more credible information than the unpopular sites and this is an assumption is somewhat successful in determining the significance of search results. The search engine manually determines the relevance and the popularity by deploying its mathematical algorithm to sort the relevant results and rank the results in the order of popularity. The key variables in the algorithm are the ranking factors.
