Reflection over the past five weeks allowed me to see the difficulty in leading and working with a diverse group. Difficulties because a group always seems to feel overlooked and may operate in silence. Action that hinders the overall progress and productivity of an organization and creates an unpleasant work environment when works do not communicate.
Boundary spanning would be an essential aspect of leadership. Everyone must work on getting collaboration for the department and team members to confirming through action that we are a team working toward one goal. Before the office environment becomes divided, or workers began to ignore or distance other cultures, a solution should be in place. Defining boundaries brings clarity and defines teams and personal responsibilities. Encouraging teamwork and providing opportunities to build the team other than in the workplace will help eliminate stereotypes and allow the worker to get to know each on a different level.
Communication is essential in preventing segregation and creating a silo environment within the office. Department and team leader communication will help build unity within the organization, a department. A useful tool that will help with collaboration and prevent struggle between departments and coworkers is boundaries. Creating an interdepartmental goal that requires teamwork will encourage working together and that everyone has a role in organizational success.
Success in a diversified workplace requires training and good management leadership, learning about other cultures, and emphasizing the importance of teamwork. A leader that would treat fairly and not take a side is how I would like to be remembered by employees.
