Week 6 - Diseases of the Respiratory & Digestive Systems (Case Study)

Create a case study from one of the respiratory or digestive issues described in this unit as your original post. Ask some questions from your case study that you would like your classmates to comment on. Then, reply to two other case studies from other students. I have provided some example questions for you to use if you would like. This is an exercise in getting to know patients condition before death. Knowing these pathologies will help you, as the embalmer, to know what possible plan of action to take in preparing the deceased.

· What precautions should you take as the embalmer to limit the effects of these complications?

Case Study

A 31 year old male with high blood pressure and no other know illness. He had been working a turnaround that required a lot of hours and he was very tired. The wife said he was working the night shift and was preparing to leave for the evening. He sat in the recliner to put his boots on and play with the kids before he left. She went to get his boots and when she came back she found him slumped over in the recliner. She called 911 and attempted CPR. The wife said he had been drinking energy drinks everyday since the turn around to keep his energy up to make it through the night shift. He was taken for autopsy to find the cause of death, since he really had no know heart disease and was so sudden.

ALEXANRA’S POST:

The body of an 73yr old woman arrives in your care deep into winter time. She had been residing in an assisted living facility for the past two years but spent the last week of her life in a hospital. She is slightly overweight. There is some swelling on her face and neck and evidence of an oxygen mask having been attached to her for some time.  There is cyanosis evident in her lips, fingers and feet. She has mild generalized edema, most evident in her face and lower extremities. When moving her, there is some watery red purge from her mouth and nose.  Did she have a respiratory or a digestive issue prior to death? What issues need to be addressed by the embalming process? What potential complications do you see arising as a result of the pathology?
