Week 6: Cross-cultural Perspectives
Subscribe
This week, our discussion will be a little different. Please find an article or video that discusses end-of-life care, death rituals, and/or mourning rituals in a culture and/or religion different than your own and compare this to end-of-life rituals seen in the United States. You may use one of the resources in the Recommended Resources list or find another resource outside of the classroom.
Summarize the article or video (and include a citation and reference) and connect it to at least one of peer reviewed reference (also be sure to cite it).
An excellent response will be at least 1 page in length, using complete sentences and concise language. Please review published peer-reviewed articles (from the Library website) (see syllabus for details) and include citations and references in all post responses.
Discussion 6: Race and Ethnicity
Must post first.
Subscribe
In this discussion, we’ll examine the concepts of race and ethnicity and consider the relationship between ethnic stratification and privilege.
Please answer the following questions in your initial discussion post using concepts and examples from at least two of the required resources this week:
· In the introduction to their book Seeing White: An Introduction to White Privilege and Race, Halley, Eshleman & Vijaya (2010) argue that “Often whites simply perceive themselves as ‘normal’ or ‘just human’ and fail to notice their own race” (p. 4). What do you interpret this statement? How does this relate to the idea that race is socially and culturally constructed?
· Review the Pew Research Center’s (2020) report Amid National Reckoning, Americans Divided on Whether Increased Focus on Race Will Lead to Major Policy Change. Why do you think the different groups discussed in the article have different views of the progress that has been made on equality? Which group do you most closely agree with? Why? How do the groups that you're part of influence your perspective here? Is this an area where you might have a single story?

WEEK 6 DISCUSSION
WELCOME to the discussion for WEEK 6. Please respond in complete sentences for each question, unless directed to do otherwise, demonstrating in your reply that you have read the material in order to receive full credit.
Topic 1: The Digital Divide
This week you read Digital Divide in a Global Economy
Discussion: More than just a tool for information transfer, the Internet has become a conduit for a globalized workforce. However, as the Internet has become integrated into daily business life, a digital divide has emerged. Some derive the benefits of Internet access, but many others do not. Questions:
1. Could the digital divide change the way people think about themselves in relation to the rest of the world? Provide experiences, observations, or references to Week 6's readings that helped shaped your opinion.
2. What barriers exist that make it difficult to close the digital divide in economies like India and China? What barriers exist in a developed country such as America?
Topic 2: Digital Natives Digital Immigrants
This week you read Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants by Mark Prensky.
Discussion: According to Prensky, today's students are no longer the people our educational system was designed to teach. Prensky also pointed out that there needs to be a switch in the way in which educators teach because students are losing out due to the "old fashioned" methods of teaching which are still being used today. Question #1: Do you agree that educators have to keep abreast of the technological changes and adjust the curriculum accordingly? (justify and support your answer).
