Voting and the Role of Interest Groups

· Based on the scenario and the knowledge gained from this section, address the following:

· Determine three roles that interest groups play in American politics in terms of impacting election outcomes.

· What about the largest interest group...the American voter?

· What are some examples of interest groups or special interests that...well...people don't really think of as interest groups or special interests?

· Are special interest groups and lobbyists really that powerful? If so, what does that say about the voter that continues to vote for them?

· What are some of the differences between "good" special interests and "bad" special interests? How can you tell the difference?

· What role does the media play in making some "good" special interests seem bad and "bad" special interests seem good to the voter?

· What role does voter fraud play in elections and what are some ways that voter fraud is committed?

Good Evening Class and Professor Salley,

I am responding to: Are special interest groups and lobbyists really that powerful? If so, what does that say about the voter that continues to vote for them?

Interest groups have been characterized as “an organization that pressures elected officials to enact legislation favorable to its causes.” Any type of group that has more than three MAJOR interest groups—would be considered powerful.  If an interest group promotes negative health and are wealthy…if that does not speak POWERFUL, nothing does.  Powerful is money that circulates to get what the special interest groups want.  National Rifle Association is among the special interest groups and we have seen for years, how gun violence has reaped the United States and still no change.

What it says about the voter that votes for them is…it does not matter.  Ethical and morals does not stand a chance.

· Describe key elements of the role that Congress plays within the U.S. federal system, with particular focus on Congress’ ability to reflect the will of the people. Support your argument with at least two concrete examples.

· What are some of the issues that Congress is permitted by the Constitution to be involved in? (See Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution...)

· What are some of the thing Congress is NOT allowed to do?

· What is the role of Congress in relation to the role of the President, keeping in mind that they are two SEPERATE and COEQUAL branches of government?

· What has been the results of the 17th Amendment on the Congress, states, and the country as a whole?
