Describe how divorce has evolved over time. What changes have occurred in our legal systems?

Divorce has historically carried with it a stigma that was introduced through religion, for the most part. In the past, because marriage was as simple as jumping over a broom into the home over the threshold, it was simply a matter of jumping backward over the same broom. However, divorce lost some of its stigma in the 1800s as more people married early and were unhappy in their marriage. In the past, it was common for the men to request divorce while women had to stay in difficult and troubled marriages until the early 1900s. Divorce laws have also evolved over time as certain states legalized the process. There was a state that legalized this before the others and they created "divorce mills" where attorneys would profit from overseeing the proceedings. As more states legalized divorce, migratory divorce became common. Today, however, divorce is considered to be a normal part of family life and it is estimated that 40% of children will experience divorce in some form or live in a divorced home (Howe, 2016).

Is there a connection between women entering the workforce in much larger numbers in the 1960's, women having access to safe and effective birth control and the increase in the divorce rate during that same time in U.S. history?
