Unit 5 Writing Assignment
Reading Strategy 1: Anticipation Guide
“An anticipation guide is a strategy used before reading to activate student’s prior knowledge and build curiosity about a new topic” (Wilkins, 2021). In the text, “Little Things Are Big” Jesus Colon lived in a time where discrimination against African Americans was prevalent which forced him to decide to avoid helping the young white lady who clearly needed his help.
· Give students a handout with statements about the text. The handout will consist of statements and students will check yes or no for each statement. For example, “Can a black man can help a white woman in distress? Are black people loved by white people? Are whites superior to blacks? Questions to get them thinking.
· Mark their best guess on what they think they know.
· After reading the text, have students to look back at the guide to see what they have learned.
· Discuss to see if students would change the answers they chose or keep them the same.
Reading Strategy II: Compare and Contrast
Comparing and contrasting is a form of higher order thinking. This strategy is important because it allows students to improve their comprehension by highlighting important details making abstract ideas more concrete, and reducing confusion between concepts that are related.
· Explain to students that the activity that we will be doing deals with comparing and contrasting.
· Tell students that comparing is when you tell how two or more items are similar and contrasting is when you tell how two or more items are different.
· Show students an anchor chart on comparing and contrasting.
· Model for students how to compare and contrast when writing.
· Write a paragraph comparing and contrasting lions to tigers.
· Have students to compare and contrast the events in the text to something they have experienced. It could be a movie they watched, a newspaper article, something they saw on the news or social media.
· Use the anchor chart and the teacher sample to write their response.
Reading Strategy III: Cause and Effect
· Tell students that we will re-read the text and look for examples of cause and effect that occurred throughout the passage.
· The teacher will show students an anchor chart explaining cause and effect.
· Tell students that a cause always comes first and the effect of the cause comes after.
· The teacher will model for students doing a think aloud on how to identify the cause and effect in the sentences written on the anchor chart.
· The teacher will have the students to identify the cause and effect to check for understanding.
· After reading the text, have students to identify cause and effect statements throughout the text.
· Have students to record the items on a graphic organizer.
· Give students a list of questions dealing with cause and effect and have them to record the answers to the questions on the graphic organizer.
Strategy IV: Analyzing text structure
Analyzing text structures helps students to organize information and details in their mind while they are reading. It also helps students to make connections between the details in the text and helps them to summarize important details in the text. Knowing text structures gives students a better understanding of the text.
· The teacher will show students an anchor chart on text structures.
· Go over each structure and show students an example of each.
· Go over key words related to each text structure.
· Model for the students how to use a graphic to analyze the text structure of the passage.
· Write down key words and determine the text structure.
· The teacher will use the anchor chart to help determine the text structure.
· Have students to analyze the text just read.
· Use a graphic organizer to write down the characteristics from the text.
· Find key words.
· Determine the text structure of the text using the anchor chart.
