Doctor of Hepatology

Hepatologist

The level of education that is needed to become a Hepatologist is a breakdown of 4-year undergraduate degree of your choice depending upon the requirements of the medical institution you are accepted into, 3 years of residency, and 3 years of fellowship with a clinic or hospital and passing the required certification exams with the end results as a Doctor of Medicine.

The responsibilities and tasks that are required as a Hepatologist is to follow up, treat, and help prevent recent and current patients that has or had liver failure, liver cancer, liver transplant, fatty liver, Hepatitis B or C, and cirrhosis of the liver. Hepatologist perform paracentesis which is referred to as abdominal taps to remove the buildup of ascites fluid within the stomach due to liver cancer, Hepatitis C, and other underlining conditions. Hepatologist are also responsible in administering approved and required vaccinations, ordering liver function test through bloodwork, adjust medications when needed, update medication list, provide consultations and perform surgeries.
